Reference Code : MGMTPER 7

RATIONALE

Through this Policy, the Board will maintain its reputation as a good employer. Appropriately qualified and experienced staff will be employed. Policies such as Equity and Equal Employment Opportunities will be considered, and appointments will be in accordance with the laws, and awards of New Zealand. The Board will appoint trained, registered, suitably qualified and competent teachers and managers.

PURPOSE

This policy outlines the procedures that will allow the James Cook High School Board of Trustees to carry out its obligations not only to provide education, deliver the N Z Curriculum and fulfil the accreditation requirements of the NZ Qualifications Authority, but also to appoint suitably qualified, trained and competent staff who will be able to undertake leadership and managerial positions with the school.

GUIDELINES

1.  A job description and/or person description is established in response to identified curriculum needs by the Principal.

2.  An advertisement is drawn up and placed by the Principal.

3.   a) Applications are made using the James Cook High School Application Form.

b)   Applicants must include proof of Registration in their application.

c)   Applicants must arrange for at least two referees to provide for the principal a confidential written report on the applicant, using the James Cook High School Referee Statement material.

4.  The Principal’s Secretary receives all applications, keeps a record of names, gender, race and qualifications of all applicants (for EEO data purposes) and posts back to applicants a notice of receipt of application.

5.  The Principal, in consultation with the Associate Principal and the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees (or nominee) and, as appropriate, any other person the Principal or Board of Trustees Chairperson may select, draws up a short list. The Principal’s Secretary arranges interview times for shortlisted applicants.

6. Interviews and selection of successful applicant are conducted by the Principal, and the Associate Principal, (for Deputy Principal position) along with the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees or nominee as a minimum number on the panel.

7. Following selection of the successful applicant, the Principal or nominee will telephone that applicant and make verbal offer of position. As soon as possible after verbal acceptance of the position has been received, the Principal or nominee will telephone unsuccessful short-listed applicants to inform them that the position has been filled.

8. The Principal will send a formal, written offer of position to the successful applicant.

9. When formal, written acceptance of the position has been received, the Principal’s Secretary will post out letters to all other applicants, notifying them that the position has been filled.

10. Appointments will be confirmed at a formal meeting of the Board of Trustees.
