Established in 1956 in Oxford, Jacari provides home tutoring for children who don’t speak English as their first language. Volunteers visit children in their own homes for an hour a week and help improve the pupil’s English proficiency and general academic confidence. We recruit volunteers from local Universities and match them one-on-one with a first or second-generation immigrant, refugee or asylum-seeker child at a local school. These children have been identified by their teacher as needing additional academic support.Jacari offers ongoing support throughout the tutoring experience, as well as hosting termly events and trips for children and volunteers. Jacari also puts on socials for volunteers, and hosts talks with similar charities such as SARI.

Now in our third year, Jacari Bristol currently supports over 50 children from 3 schools in Bristol. In Oxford, where we originated, there are currently 200 children from 18 local schools receiving Jacari tutors.Over the next year our aim is to grow Jacari Bristol into a fully operational branch of Jacari that continues to meet the needs of the migrant communities in Bristol.
