Course Description:

In high school Physical Science we will be covering the topics: Motion and Forces, Kinetic and Potential Energy, Waves and Electricity, as well as some beginning Chemistry.

It is my desire for learning to be a valuable and enjoyable experience for both the students and the teacher. I am very excited to have a class that will provide many applicable “hands-on” experiences for students to learn and master the Common Core Standards. My classroom is set up to reach this goal. Please feel free to visit for individual and/or academic assistance. I can always make myself available before and after school. Course Objectives:

Students will:

  1. Lean entrepreneurial themes throughout the school year.
  2. Learn to work in cooperative teams with their classmates.
  3. Complete various tasks and challenges throughout the year.
  4. Complete a variety of projects.
  5. Participate in group and class discussions.
  6. Be challenged and have fun!

Evaluation:

All Grades will be computed on a points earned out of points possible basis. As the importance of an assignment increases, so does the assignment’s points value. Missing assignments will be counted as zero points. Students are responsible to maintaining their own work. Grades are updated on a weekly basis.

Class Supplies:

Students are expected to bring the following to class everyday:

  1. Pen and pencil
  2. Highlighter (any color)
  3. College rule loose leaf paper
  4. Proper documents / assignments for class
  5. Scientific Calculator
  6. Textbook

Academic Honesty:

Any student involved in dishonesty in any work, quizzes, tests, etc., will be subject one, some, or all of the following: an automatic zero on the work, a referral to the Principal, and a conference between the Principal, the parent(s) and the teacher.

Class Policies:

  1. LATE WORK: All assignments should be completed and turned in by appropriate due dates. Any work not turned in on time will received 30% off per school day, up to three days. Students are responsible for arranging a time to meet with the teacher if an absence occurs.
  2. PARTICIPATION: Participation includes, but is not limited to; arrive to class on time, being prepared, doing all work, following class policies, and actively participate in class discussion.
  3. GUM/DRINKS: Gum is not allowed and beverages must have a lid/cap on them.
  4. ELECTRONICS: All electronics will be taking if used during class, unless given permission.
  5. DRESS CODE: Students must be in appropriate Ivy uniform attire at all times. See “dress code policy” for details.

Classroom Management Policy:

You are young teenagers and have reached a level of maturity that requires you to accept full responsibility for your conduct and your treatment/interactions with your peers and teachers.

Expectations:

As your teacher, here’s what you can expect from me to help you succeed in this course:

  1. I will be prepared to teach each day.
  2. I will write the appropriate agenda on the white board daily.
  3. I will teach the school-approved curriculum.
  4. I will prepare interesting and engaging lessons.
  5. I will provide students with the equipment and knowledge necessary to complete assignments in class.

Here is what you, as a student, can do to be successful in my class:

  1. Come to class on time, prepared to learn each day.
  2. Bring/turn in all your assignments on time.
  3. Use a planner to organize your learning and keep track of your assignments.
  4. Utilize my availability if you need help before any deadlines.
  5. Take responsibility for your learning.

As parents/guardians, you can help your child by:

  1. Taking an interest in your child’s studies.
  2. Help your child to develop good time-management strategies.
  3. Working with your child to set realistic goals for success.
  4. Frequently review Powerschool and the Science website for up-to-date assignments.
  5. If you see that your child is having difficulties in a class, please intervene immediately. Contact the teacher and encourage our child to seek out additional help with the teacher.

I am very excited to be working with you this year in High School Physical Science. Together we can make sure you have a great time exploring the world around you, while learning. If extra help is needed at any time, please don’t hesitate to ask.
