Maritime Mobile Service

Note from the BR

The Radiocommunication Bureau wishes to remind Administrations that Distress alerting and Safety related communications in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) using communication and alerting techniques such as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) are based, inter alia, on the assignment of Maritime Mobile Service Identities (MMSIs) and their usage by stations of the Maritime Mobile Service.

At present, there are 414 077 ship stations recorded in the ITU maritime database which are accessible via the Maritime Access and Retrieval System (MARS). Out of these 414 077 records, only 152 529 are carrying a MMSI number, thus conforming to GMDSS requirements. In order to enhance the use of the ITU maritime database for Search and Rescue activities in the GMDSS, and in
accordance with the provisions of Nos. RR19.38 and RR 20.16 of Articles 19 and 20 of the Radio Regulations, Administrations are requested to review their national registers for ship stations and to notify as appropriate the Radiocommunication Bureau of all ship stations required by international agreements (ITU Radio Regulations and IMO SOLAS Convention, as amended), with their assigned MMSI numbers, for registration in the ITU maritime database.
