What is the MOVE IT Challenge?

  • The MOVE IT Challenge is a fun, onlineteam-based 8-weekchallenge that encouragesfaculty, staff and spouses, to engage in physical activity to help create a healthier Dartmouth community.

When does MOVE IT start?

  • Registration opens on Tuesday, March 4th.
  • The MOVE ITChallenge begins on Monday, March 24th and ends on Sunday, May 18th.

How do I participate?

Why should I participate?

  • You can help support the health of our Dartmouth community.
  • Physical activity has many benefits including controlling weight, improving mental health and mood, and reducing your risk of certain diseases and cancers.
  • Just for registering for the MOVE IT Challenge (and creating/joining a team), you will receive a free pedometer to help you track your activity.
  • Daily prize drawings will happen during the registration period - the earlier you register, the more chances you have to win a $40 Amazon Gift Card or a Fitbit Zip Wireless Activity Tracking Device! Two winners will be announced daily!
  • Various other fun prizes will be available during the challenge, including t-shirts!

Who is eligible to participate?

All active, benefits eligible Dartmouth College employees and their spouses including, legally married spouses, civil union partners, and same sex domestic partners.

What kind of activities count towards the challenge?

If you're moving, it counts! Activities could include walking, dancing, biking, running, swimming, yoga, exercise class, house cleaning, taking the stairs, playing basketball, golf or tennis, or simply jumping rope! All activities you log will automatically convert to steps.

How do I track my physical activity?

It's easy to track your activity! You can log your steps using a pedometer (if you don't have one, be sure to check the 'yes' box during registration so you receive a free one!), or you can select your exercise activity from a long list of activities already programmed in the system, or if you have a Fitbit activity tracking device you can automatically sync your activity.

What is the goal of the MOVE IT challenge?

  • Each week, teams will work together by logging their activity to meet various milestones.
  • Individuals will aim for an average daily step goal of 7,000 steps which will progress over the 8-week challenge to an average daily step goal of 10,000 to help their team reach the milestones. All teams who meet certain milestones will be entered into weekly drawings for fun prizes! The more milestones you reach, the more chances you have to win the final prize drawing at the end of the challenge! If your team reaches the final milestone, all team members will receive a T-shirt.
  • Prizes will also be awarded to the team with the highest average number of steps and the most improved team. Work together for a chance to win a team lunch and an award certificate!

How many team members can be on a team?

Teams must have between 4 – 10 team members. Teams can include employees and/or spouses from any area of the College.

What does it mean to be a Team Captain?

As a Team Captain, you'll be responsible for creating your team name and team description, and selecting an Avatar (image) to represent your team in the online platform - but don't worry, I'm sure your team members will help you come up with these things! Team Captains will also help motivate team members!

What if I want to participate, but I don't have a team?

No problem! Just follow the registration steps and once you are registered, reach out to and we will assist you with selecting a team.
