Course Description

Student will identify and use network transmission media; explain the OSI model; recognize the primary network topologies/protocols, identify their characteristics, and determine which would be most appropriate for a proposed network; identify the functions of a network operating system and distinguish between centralized, client/server, and peer-to-peer systems; and distinguish between Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) and identify the components used to expand a LAN into a WAN.

(3) CD-R -or- CD-RW (writeable or rewriteable blank CDROMs) w/cases

(4) Notebook to organize & maintain handouts, notes, exams, and lab work.

(5) Pens, Pencils, Paper, Highlighters, Term Paper presentation folders,
Pocket folders for assignments, and other nominal supplies as can be
expected for completion of a college course.

Maintaining email communication and assignment submission via email will be a major graded component of class attendance. Class attendance is mandatory. Absences totaling two class weeks is considered excessive and is grounds for being dropped from the course. No make-up tests will be given except in emergency situations. Students requesting special or disability accommodations; or information are encouraged to contact the office of Special Services, located in the HarvinCenter, 698-1298.

I. ITNW 1425 Fundamentals of Networking(2-4-3) 52.1204

Instruction in networking technologies and their implementation. Topics include the OSI reference model, network protocols, transmission media, and networking hardware and software

Suggested prerequisite: ITSC 1301. Assessment Levels: R1, E1, M1.

COURSE IDEA OBJECTIVES:

Important:Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, trends)

Important:Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories.

Important:Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course.

SCANS (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) competencies are integrated into this course competency-based outcomes to improve your education by helping you better define and use work place skills needed for employment. Each competency will integrate several scans competencies to assist you in developing and reinforcing employable skills. Competencies are criterion referenced (i.e., they are measured against predetermined levels of proficiency in skills for effective job performance).

The know-how identified by SCANS is made up of five competencies and a three-part foundation of skills and personal qualities that are needed for solid job performance. These are:

WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES -- Effective workers can productively use:

II. ITNW 1425 LEARNING OUTCOME--JOB SKILL:

A. Identify and describe the functions of each of the seven layers of the OSI reference model.

B. Describe data link and network addresses and identify key differences between them.

C. Define and describe the function of a MAC address.

D. List the key internetworking functions of the OSI Network layer.

E. Identify at least three reasons why the industry uses a layered model.

F.Describe the two parts of network addressing, then identify the parts in specific protocol address examples.

G.Identify the functions of each layer of the ISO/OSI reference model.

H.Define and explain the five conversion steps of data encapsulation.

I.Describe the different classes of IP addresses [and subnetting].

J.Identify the functions of the TCP/IP network-layer protocols.
