ITEM 722 – EMULSIFIED PRIME COAT

722.1 DESCRIPTION

722.1.1 This item consists of supply and application of an emulsified prime coat on a granular surface.

722.2MATERIALS

722.2.1 All material shall be supplied by the Contractor.

722.2.2 Emulsified Prime shall be Enviro-prem or equivalent, and shall meet the requirements of Table 722-1.

722.2 3 Emulsified Prime shall be free of solvents and there will be no release of VOC’s.

722.3SUBMITTALS

722.3.1 The Contractor shall notify the Engineer at least 3 days in advance of the application of the emulsified prime coat.

722.3.2 The Contractor shall submit upon request the manufacturer’s certification that the materials supplied meet the specified requirements as detailed in the Contract Documents.

722.4CONSTRUCTION

722.4.1 The Contractor shall carry out the Work as indicated in the Contract Documents and /or as specifically directed by the Engineer.

722.4.2 Bituminous pressure distributors shall be capable of applying prime within +/- 5% of established application rates and at a continuous and uniform rate both longitudinally and transversely.

722.4.3 Distributors shall be equipped with a tank gauge and measuring stick graduated in litres, and a sampling valve.

722.4.4 Immediately prior to application of the prime coat, the Contractor shall scarify and shape the granular material to provide 50 mm of loose/homogeneous material across the surface to be primed.

722.4.5 The Contractor shall protect through traffic and adjacent Highway / Structure appurtenances from prime coat overspray.

722.4.5.1 The Contractor shall be responsible to remove any bitumen adhering to these surfaces.

722.4.6 Prior to the application of the prime coat, the Contractor shall dampen the granular surface with water as directed by the Engineer.

722.4.6.1Water required shall be supplied in accordance with Item 191.

722.4.7 The Emulsified prime coat shall be applied in a uniform manner, without streaking, at a rate of 2.0 to 3.0 L/ m²as directed by the Engineer.

722.4.7.1 For the purpose of establishing the Unit Price for Emulsified Prime Coat the Bidder shall assume an application rate of 2.5 L/m2.

722.4.8 The Emulsified Prime shall be overlapped 0.1 m at the centerline.

722.4.9 Temperature of the bituminous prime when applied shall be between 40ºC and 70ºC.

722.4.10 Application of Emulsified Prime shall only be carried out when ambient temperature at the Work Area is above 10°C.

722.4.11 Emulsified prime coat shall be allowed to cure for such a time as approved by the Engineer and traffic shall be diverted around freshly sprayed surfaces until the material has been rolled and sufficiently cured.

722.4.12 Primed surfaces shall be rolled with a vibratory double drum steel wheeled roller, weighing not less than 7 t.

722.4.13Prior to allowing traffic to travel on the primed surface, excess asphalt remaining on the surface shall be blotted with sand.

722.4.14If surface defects develop in the primed surface prior to placement of asphalt concrete, the Contractor shall repair such defects.

722.4.15 Asphalt concrete shall not be placed upon the primed surface for a minimum of 12hours after the application.

722.5MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT

722.5.1 The Quantity to be measured for payment shall be the number of square metres of emulsified prime coat supplied and applied in accordance with this item.

722.6BASIS OF PAYMENT

722.6.1 Payment for this Work shall be at the Unit Price.

722.6.2 Compensation to the Contractor or the Owner for differences between the actual amount of Emulsified Prime used, as verified by the Contractor’s daily weigh slips plus appropriate documentation from the supplier to verify the amount in the last tanker, and the assumed application rate as per 722.4.7.1 shall be as follows:

722.6.2.1 Compensation to the Contractor or the Owner shall be at the actual invoiced price for the Emulsified Prime.

ITEM 724 – CRACK MILLING AND PATCHING

724.1 DESCRIPTION

724.1.1This Item consists of repairing transverse cracks in the existing Pavement, including cold milling, and supplying and placing bituminous tack coat and hot mix conventional asphalt concrete over the milled area of each repair.

724.2MATERIALS

724.2.1All materials shall be supplied by the Contractor.

724.2.2Bituminous tack coat shall meet the requirements of 259.2.

724.2.3Asphalt Concrete ____ shall meet the requirements of 261.2.

724.3SUBMITTALS

724.3.1Submittals are required in accordance with any cross-referenced Item forming part of this Item

724.4CONSTRUCTION

724.4.1The Contractor shall perform the Work as indicated in the Contract Documents and/or as specifically directed by the Engineer.

724.4.2The Work shall be performed on cracks identified by the Engineer, and each crack repair started shall be completed the same day.

Include 724.4.2.1 if the contract is a recap with milling

724.4.2.1 Crack repairs shall be performed after the Work under Item 208.

724.4.3Each crack shall be cold milled to a depth of 50 mm and width of 1500 mm centered over the crack.

724.4.3.1The RAP shall be stockpiled at the Owner’s Maintenance Depot in ______at an average haul distance of ___ km from the Work Area.

724.4.4The milled area shall be thoroughly cleaned, then tacked per 259.4.

724.4.5Asphalt Concrete ____ shall be placed at a rate of 120 kg/m2 per 261.4, and compacted with a pneumatic-tired roller.

724.5MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT

724.5.1The Quantity to be measured for payment will be the number of linear metres of transverse cracks completed in accordance with this Item.

724.6BASIS OF PAYMENT

724.6.1Payment at the Unit Price will be full compensation for all the Work performed under this Item.

ITEM 728 – PAVEMENT REINFORCEMENT

728.1DESCRIPTION

728.1.1This Item consists of the supply and installation of a Pavement reinforcement product/system for repair of transverse cracks.

728.2MATERIALS

728.2.1All materials shall be supplied by the Contractor.

728.2.2Pavement reinforcement properties shall meet or exceed the requirements shown in Table 728-1.

728.2.3Pavement reinforcement shall have pressure-sensitive adhesive backing.

728.2.4The material shall be handled and protected per the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations until incorporated into the Work.

728.3SUBMITTALS

728.3.1The Contractor shall submit, in advance of the Work, the manufacturer’s certification that the materials supplied meet the specified requirements. The Engineer will have the final determination as to whether minimum requirements have been met.

728.3.2The Contractor shall submit, upon request, the manufacturer’s recommended instructions for handling and installing the materials.

728.4CONSTRUCTION

728.4.1The Contractor shall carry out the Work as indicated in the Contract Documents and/or as specifically directed by the Engineer.

728.4.2The Contractor shall follow the manufacturer’s recommended installation procedures except as noted otherwise in this Item.

728.4.3The Pavement reinforcement shall be placed after patching of cracks under Item 724.

728.4.3.1After sweeping or blowing the patched surface clean, the Contractor shall place the Pavement reinforcement to completely cover the patch, immediately prior to paving with Asphalt Concrete ___ under Item 260/261.

728.4.4The Contractor shall ensure bonding of the Pavement reinforcement to the underlying patched surface by rolling it with a pneumatic-tired roller of no less than 10 t mass.

728.5MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT

728.5.1The Quantity to be measured for payment will be the number of square metres of Pavement reinforcement placed in accordance with this Item.

728.5.2Overlapped joints, patches and seams will be measured as a single layer.

728.6BASIS OF PAYMENT

728.6.1Payment at the Unit Price will be full compensation for all Work performed under this Item.
