Once again Lincoln’s Open House/Curriculum Nights were huge successes. It was wonderful to see so many families come to meet the teachers, hear about the goals and activities planned for this school year, and visit the classrooms with their children. As the school year progresses, your children’s teachers will make every effort to continue to keep in close contact with you. Please complete our team by continuing to communicate with your children’s teachers. There are several options to choose for this purpose - a note in the daily planner, the teacher’s e-mail, or a phone call. If a teacher is unavailable, the office staff will gladly forward a parent into a teacher’s voicemail or leave a written note for the teacher. Teachers are very willing to meet with parents before 8:45 a.m. or after school. Since the staff is often involved in meetings during these times, we ask that you call your child’s teacher to set up an appointment.
Special Notice: PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent conferences this year are scheduled for Wednesday,
Nov. 12, through Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. Sign up sheets for
Conferences were available during Curriculum Night/Open
House. If you missed signing up or were unable to attend the
evening presentations, please contact your child’s teacher soon
toschedule aconference. Parents will receive their children’s
report cards at these conferences. This is also the time to discuss
your children’s progress so far this school year.

Superintendent’s Message –

A Very Good Year

The 2007-08 School Year was a very good year for the Lakewood City School District. Academic Achievement improved moving the State’s Designation for Lakewood up one ranking to “Effective”. Lakewood opened two more new schools this Fall, Emerson Elementary School and Horace Mann Elementary School, “On time and on budget.” This brings the total to six new schools opened in the last two years “On time and on budget.” We also opened the new West Shore Arts and Communication Technology Program that will provide more opportunities to the students of Lakewood, as well as Bay Village, Rocky River and Westlake. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of students, staff, parents and the support of our Community. My sincerest thanks to everyone for making the 2007-08 school year a banner year for Lakewood!

THIRD GRADE ACHIEVEMENT TEST

OnTuesday, October 7th, students in grade 3 take the Ohio Reading Achievement Test. Monday will be a day of practice and review. Students, who are absent on Tuesday, will be given the test one day during that week.

Students should get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and report to school on time. The test will be given shortly after the school day begins.

MID-QUARTER PROGRESS REPORTS

Mid-quarter progress reports for many students (Gr. 1-5) will be sent home on Monday, October 6th - either through the mailed or in your child’s planner. These reports provide important information about your student’s attendance as well as progress in his/her daily achievement. It is at the teacher’s discretion if every student receives a progress report or those students who have low grades, missing work, or attendance concerns. If you do not receive a progress report and have a concern about your child’s academic growth, please contact your child’s teacher.

Morning Procedure

A reminder to all parents - Students should arrive at school between 8:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., the second bell rings. After 9:00 a.m. students are considered late and are to come to the office for an admit slip. Students who are coming to breakfast may enter the building between 8:30 – 8:45 a.m.

Teachers are very willing to meet with parents before 8:45 a.m. or after school. Since the staff is often involved in meetings during these times, we ask that you call your child’s teacher to set up an appointment.

Daily Attendance

It is extremely important that eachDuring the second week in October, the State child is at school on time every day. of Ohio counts the number of students

All the information shared and theattending each school district. This number rich classroom activities cannot be is used to determine the amount of money

those valuable learning experiences. City Schools.

If your child must be absent, please

call the 24-hour attendance line at 529-4305.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Drop-Off/Pick-Up Procedures: We ask that students routinely walk to school. However, when it is not possible to walk, parents and other adults have to transport their children to school. Lincoln’s Pick-up and Drop-off procedures for our students were established with the assistance of a parent committee, have been in place for the past several years. Please note: Preschool students are all dropped off in the drive through. This class starts school earlier than K-5 students. It is important that these parents are first in line so that they can drop off their child on time. Therefore, K-5 parents should not get in line for drop off until after 8:30 a.m.

Please Do Not: 1. Do not drop off your child on the street or have them walk across the street to your vehicle at the end of the day. Sudden stopping to let a child out of a car in the morning causes cars to block Clifton Avenue.

2. Students who are dropped off by the gym door may wait for the bell at either the east or west back school door.

They do not have to walk around to their classroom line.

3. Do not illegally park your vehicle - it blocks the narrow side streets and makes it impossible for larger cars and vans to pass.

4. Do not illegally park your vehicle in a neighbor’s driveway – it is infringing on another’s personal property. Lincoln School students and staff try very hard to be good neighbors to area homeowners, and we need everyone’s cooperation.

5. Do not illegally use the school parking lot to cut through from Lakeland to Summit – there is only room for one vehicle at a time to safely travel though this area.

Most important, these practices put children in danger of injury and drivers in danger of serious accidents.

Students are not permitted on the playground after school unless a parent is present to supervise them. No student is allowed on the playground before school. If students come a few minutes before 8:45 a.m., they are to line up and visit with their classmates and friends.

New Breakfast and Lunch Prices: School breakfast and lunch will cost more this year due to rising food, fuel, and service costs.

Cost of Breakfast: FreeReduced Price: $.30Full Price:$1.50

Notes from the Lincoln Library

Our school year is off to a great start!

  • All students participated in an orientation lesson and have been checking out books for several weeks. Each student was given a laminated card to hang on the refrigerator with the day of the week when they will have an opportunity to bring their books back to the library and choose new ones.
  • The Birthday Book Club had its first meeting and fifty-one students attended! Students may join at any time during the school year. Please come to the Library if you need a form.
  • We know that it is a cumbersome task to fill out all of the media and technology forms that are required each year. Thanks to all of you who completed the forms in a timely manner. We still need to have forms signed and returned to Lincoln.
  • We are also in need of volunteers to work with us in the library. The tasks are varied so please come and talk with us!

Mrs. Gage and Mrs. Cernanec

VOLUNTEER FINGERPRINTING

Effective January 1, 2008, all volunteers for the Lakewood City Schools must be fingerprinted and pass a BCI/FBI check. People who have lived in Ohio for the past 5 years need only a BCI check. People who have lived out-of-state during the past 5 years are also required to have an FBI check. Once parents sign up to volunteer, the classroom teacher will notify the school office. We will contact the Human Resource Department at the Board Office on Warren Road where prospective volunteers can go there to be fingerprinted. Please call 529-4215 to set up an appointment. The cost of the background check is paid for by the school system. Fingerprint results are good for five years. Therefore, parent volunteers who were fingerprinted last year do not have to go through the process again.

GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW WHEN YOUR CHILD IS ILL

The following are recommendations to follow regarding when to keep a sick child home from school.

A student should be free of vomiting, diarrhea and fever (temperature over 100°) for 24 hours before returning to school in order to prevent the spread of illness to others. If your child is ill in the morning before school, keep him/her at home. If your child feels better and does not have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea he/she may return to school.

A physician must evaluate a rash and if medication/ointment is ordered for a contagious condition, 24 hours of treatment must be complete before

returning to school.

Strep throat, conjunctivitis (pink eye) and impetigo infections must be treated as prescribed by your physician for at least 24 hours before your child may return to school.

These guidelines are suggested for the good of all students. A child who returns to school before being completely well runs a greater risk of infecting others. Contracting an illness such as chicken pox, flu and strep could be serious and possibly life threatening to some students. We strive to keep children healthy and with your help school can be a healthy place.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school nurse.

Support and Assistance for Families

Information about assistance for families on low and middle incomes, including insurance, is available in the school office.
