Objective: To make functional analogies between cell organelles and everyday objects.

Definition: Analogy – A comparison of two things which are similar in some respects, but otherwise are different. (An explanation of something by comparing it point by point with something else).

Procedure:Choice 1—Create a themed cell poster project (ie. a castle or a store)

On a half sheet of poster board (12” by 18”)DRAW a plant or animal cell in the middle. The cell needs to be no bigger than 5” by 6” or so. This will give you plenty of room for your analogies. The cell needs to be colored and extremely neat.

Identify as either a plant or animal cell. You must have a title.
Find the function of the cell organelles.
Find a magazine or internet picture (NO CLIP ART) of an everyday object which has a similar function or use as each cell structure.
Write an analogy to show how the cell part and the object are similar. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind the analogy. Use the following format: The nucleus is like a CEO because it controls and coordinates the activities of the whole cell in the same way the CEO controls and coordinates the activities of his company. (Do not use this analogy.)

Here is another example:

The cell wall of a plant cell is like a brick wall of a house because both of them provide support and protection. The cell wall gives the plant cell structure and keeps unwanted substances and objects out as well. The brick wall of house also keeps things out (like wind, rain, and people that aren’t invited) while enabling the house to stand up. (Do not use this analogy.)

Paste the pictures around the edges of the paper.
