BUS110 Introduction to Information Literacy

IT Orientation in Week 1 (1st Semester, 2012/2013)

Campus Network

To enjoy campus network services, you would need a user ID (identification) and a password (authentication). They should be issued to students during enrolment/registration. The user ID and password are issued for your personal use and shall not be disclosed or shared with any other person. Previously, you would need to have six personal accounts for different purposes with different IDs and passwords. However, with the implementation of the University’s Integrated Administrative Systems (IAS), a Single-Sign-On has been implemented, which means that in ideal case only one login is required to access all the services. The detailed information is as follows:

Network Account

Purpose: for you to access the computer facilities in Lingnan Campus

Logging onto the WindowsXP

After logging onto the Campus network with a valid user ID and password, you will be prompted with another window login. You have 3 options:-

-  English – WindowsXp with English interface, can read Chinese but with limited function on writing Chinese.

-  tchinese – WindowsXp with Chinese interface and full Chinese writing capability.

-  schinese – WindowsXp with Simplified Chinese interface and full Chinese writing capability.

No password is required for all these three options in WindowsXP.

The University’s Integrated Administrative Systems (IAS)

There are several application systems around the campus providing different kinds of services to students:

-  Students Banner system – student/course registration information

-  Campus Web Portal – University Intranet

-  Moodle – a web course tool used by various courses to aid the delivery of courses to students.

Each of these three systems is independent from the others and may have different user ID and password issued to students as mentioned before. Therefore changing the password does not necessarily means that the passwords of the other two systems will be changed automatically. Bearing this in mind, ITSC will be providing a Campus Pipeline in the near future integrating all of the systems to provide one single login access to all of the services.

Network Services

Email

You are provided with an email address throughout your study in Lingnan. The email address looks like

Primarily, there are 2 ways to check email.

(1)  WebMail on www.ln.edu.hk

-  Simple and easy to use: Accessible using browser anywhere on the Internet.

-  Limited mailing functions:

i.  Quota restriction on incoming/outgoing mail.

ii.  Cannot maintain large among of mail messages.

- Account name: your initial (e.g. tmchan for chan tai man)

- Password: ddmmyy (by default)

- Web link: Lingnan’s homepage à WebMail

(2)  Email client with Outlook Express, Outlook, Netscape Messager, Eudora, etc.

(Need to have them pre-installed on your computer.)

-  POP and SMTP servers are the same, i.e. “ln.edu.hk”

-  Full mailing functions such as address book, filter, alias list, different personality, editing, spell-check, etc with any of these email clients.

-  Can be accessed anywhere on the Internet.

-  Can maintain and manage email messages easily within the email client.

Both of these ways of accessing email are limited by the mail server (ln.edu.hk). You simply don’t have infinite among of disk space on server. Therefore managing your mail account is very important. Delete unwanted messages. If you want to keep a message, move it to your own storage media. Try to limit the number of email messages in your email account.

Staff/Student Intranet

Purpose: for internal information distribution.

In the Intranet, you can access various services without login again, such as Banner Services, Moodle, Library, WebMail, and others, which is the single sign-on function.

Banner Service

Purpose: for you to register subjects at the beginning of each semester and check your grades at the end of each semester.

Moodle Account

Purpose: for you to acquire the teaching materials of different subjects that are uploaded by respective instructors.

Computers in the Labs

The computers in all the labs are configured so that installation of software is not allowed. In most of the computer system (in campus), there are several ways to store data when working in these computer systems:-

-  A drive – you need your own disk

-  C, D (local) drives – some locations are restricted (temporary storage only: any files saved on the local drives of these computers will be eased upon reboot)

-  H (network) drive – files saved in this location could be retrieved anywhere within the campus network

-  E (CD-ROM) drive – some of the newer computers are equipped with CDRW drive

User guides

ITSC has prepared a lists of user guides to help students, which could be downloaded here: http://www.ln.edu.hk/itsc/info/publication/user_guides_infrastructure.shtml. Students are strongly recommended to go through the General User Guides for Students)
