December 2016/January2017

EDITOR’S MESSAGE:

It is said, “Feed your Faith and your doubts and troubles will starve to death.” (GLB)

Greetings to you all.As 2016 quickly comes to an end and we usher in 2017 I can honestly say we have had a very interesting and intense year. We had record lake levels compared to numerous prior years, lots of large and plentiful fish, we had several devastating fires rip through the Kern Valley destroying hundreds of homes and taking lives, deep snow in the Green Horn Mountains yet through it all, our beloved Club was spared. Yeah, we went through a lot with things going wrong and finally breaking but in all, we must count our Blessings. A lot of folks in the valley didn’t fare so well and our hearts go out to them. We had many private parties & a successful yard sale which helped us out financially and yet we have reached another year into the chapters of the Douglas El Segundo Rod & Gun Club. The highlight of the year I’m sure you will agree was the heated presidential race. No matter which side of the political aisle you stand on, I have never seen such hateful underhanded tactics used to gain votes. Not to mention the millions of dollars that went into the campaigning. And here I always thought it was the vote of the people who counted and not the size of your political coffers. One thing for sure, under the current regime, our gun rights have been trampled and violated at every turn in the road throughout the country, especially in California! I just wish that politicians would go after criminals as fiercely as they go after law abiding citizens who wish to defend themselves against criminals or who wish to own firearms! This country would become great again (not to quote a presidential candidate). It has been and will be my constant hope and prayer that members start using the Club more in the New Year so we can make it through to 2018.

While we are on the subject, I am reminding everyone that if you have not mailed in your 2017 renewals, they should be sent in immediately to assist with operational costs. Not to mention that if you want to stay at the Lodge or have an event, you will not be able to do it until you have submitted your renewal.

Team Duranty came through again this year with the annual “Orphan’s Thanksgiving” celebration at the Lodge. We had a full house and not to mention the full stomachs! The fare was turkey, prime rib and all the trimmings. Desserts of all kinds topped off the meal and the evening was finished off with Skeeter Mann playing guitar and singing songs while being accompanied by Jack Jr. and Scotty. A big Thank You to Mark & Erica for hosting the dinner as well as everyone else involved in making it a successful event. Hope to see you all next year!

As a Rod & Gun club, we must remain vigilant of all new legislation regarding firearms ownership. One thing for sure, although you might be a responsible gun owner, you may soon become a felon overnight when all the new gun laws take effect. I still can’t understand how we will be criminals but too many criminals involved in crimes while using firearms are still walking the streets with impunity? Now add the “recreational”use of Marijuana to the equation and we as California residents are in for a wild ride! Also, remember tobegin donating your unwanted items for next years’ yard sale to make it another great success!

A reminderto all membersthat if you expect to stay at the Lodge, you must make reservations through Jack Hays.Mail your deposits to DESR&GC at PO Box 147, Wofford Heights, CA. 93285. Your deposit will be returned by the Club Treasurer & not by Jack Hays.

Until next time, may you all be abundantly Blessed.

ATTENTION ALL HUNTERS!

Nonlead ammunition is now required for all hunting on CDFW wildlife areas and ecological reserves and when taking upland game birds with a shotgun, except for dove, quail, snipe and any game taken in licensed game bird clubs. In addition, nonlead shot is required when using a shotgun to take resident small game mammals, furbearing mammals, nongame mammals, nongame birds and any wildlife under the authority of a CDFW depredation permit.

Although full implementation of the nonlead ammunition requirement for big game hunting does not go into effect until July1, 2019, CDFW urges California hunters to start acquiring and practicing with nonlead ammo well before 2019.

Building Fund

Dear Members,

As you all well know, our Lodge is under constant need of repair and upgrading. Several years ago, I started the Building Fund Project which was very successful thanks to you all. It was established since a lot of members felt left out of all the scheduled work parties to make all the necessary repairs and upkeep. For one reason or another, members couldn’t attend yet they still wanted to somehow be involved in the upkeep of the Lodge. We started the special fund again to provide for emergency repairs and upgrades. This fund will goes directly for materials used in the upkeep and for special needs in case of emergencies.

This is how it works: Below you will find the attached donation certificate. Fill it out and forward it with your donation check or money order made out to “Douglas El Segundo Rod & Gun Club”. On the side memo line, write in “Building Fund”. It’s that simple.

I would like to thank all of you in advance for your contribution and acknowledging the need for beautifying the Lodge which is second only to our valued members.

Sincerely Yours, TBear Ochoa
