Issues in Transport and Environment

Principles and Applications

Objectives

This course is designed to introduce participants to the multiple and diverse aspects of transport and the environment theory for urban settings. The aim of the course is to promote and enhance the technical expertise of participants regarding these topics. On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

·  Understand national and international contexts on transport and the environment.

·  Appreciate and be alert to current issues in SA relating to traffic flow, road safety and air quality.

·  Have an increased understanding of the research, knowledge and skills gap with the various stakeholders in relevant transport fields.

·  Understand the multiple complexities of successful planning, data collection and analysis and identification of improvements.

Course Content

·  Situation analysis for road safety, traffic flow and air quality

·  Daily interactive sessions on the relevant topic(s)

·  Aggregate and microscopic traffic flow analysis/dynamics

·  Public transport (overview of types, needs, guides etc.)

·  Western Cape accident analysis

·  Data sources, needs, collection methods and challenges

·  Causes of road crashes

·  Road safety analysis/investigation methods

·  Types of air pollution

·  Sources of air pollution

·  Integrated data system for air pollution

·  Air quality monitoring standards

·  Noise pollution

·  Mitigation measures for air/noise pollution

Course Convenor

Dr. Marianne Vanderschuren is an Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town. She has more than 20 years experience in the field of transport planning and engineering. Over the last 12 years she has translated Developed World Best Practices to Southern Africa in various fields. This course is a result of international collaboration between universities from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Uganda as well as EURIST and the University of York/Stockholm Environment Institute.

Three international speakers will form part of the lecturing team.

Course Information

Who should attend?

This course will be of benefit to all who are concerned with the planning and implementation of sustainable transport in the urban environment and those involved with environmental impact analyses. This will include planners, engineers, consultants, municipal and regional authority officers, urban planners, students and NGO staff. Applicants from or interested in these or cognate professions are welcome. It is expected that the applicants will have a basic competence in the aspects of road safety, travel flow, air quality and noise.

Format

The course is intensive and will take place over three day. It consists of lectures as well as practical sessions. To accommodate for partial attendance, each day will have a short general introduction. Day 1 will then focus on travel flow, issues and management of travel flow. Day 2 will look at road safety aspects. Day 3 will focus on air quality aspects specifically related to transportation. The afternoon sessions for each day will involve pertinent and appropriate group work.

Cost

The cost of the course is or R3600 for all three days (partial attendance, for a minimum of 2 days, is possible at a reduced cost). The appropriate amount is due on or before the 30 November 2012. The course fee includes course notes, as well as lunch and refreshments.

Certificates

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to all course members who attend a minimum number of sessions.

CPD Credit Requirements

The course is registered with ECSA, and is accredited for the award of CPD/CET points.
