A team from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) paid a courtesy call on the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS recently in his office.

Receiving the team in his office, the Vice-Chancellor expressed delight that the visit of the team to the University will help clear backlog of questions and agitations in the minds of members of staff and enable the staff benefit from the unending support of TETFUND.

Prof. Ahaneku explained that TETFUND intervention has done a lot of good in the ivory tower. He urged TETFUND to continue to lead and show level of excellence to ensure that the university system is properly positioned. The VC explained that despite issues encountered by some staff in accessing the TETFUND grants, the University ensures that the process is followed in a transparent way. He expressed optimism that the difficulties experienced by these staff would be taken care of by the end of the workshop.

In his reaction, the team leader Arc. Uchendu Wogu commended the Vice-Chancellor for the warmth reception and hospitality. He explained that the visit is aimed at sensitizing the beneficiary institutions on the workings of TETFUND, as well as tackling agitations from various quarters. He disclosed that the sensitization workshop is on-going simultaneously in various institutions of higher learning in the South East. Arc. Wogu posited that at the end of the workshop, the beneficiaries through the observance of the guidelines would have easier and smoother access to the TETFUND grants.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Charles Esimone, FAS, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, and the Acting University Bursar, Mrs. Joy Ojukwu were present at the meeting. Also, members of the team include; Mohammed Sani Suleiman, Geraldine Adewole, Comfort Ukwu, AbdulkareemTukur, SanusiJaji, Adebayo Phillips and Amos Anetekhai.

In a sustained effort to consolidate the increasing relationship between Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and selected Universities in China, the hardworking VC, Prof Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS, received invitations to visit four universities in China namely Heibei Normal University, Communication University of China, Beijing, Sichuan Normal University, Chengdu and Xiamen University.

Based on this, discussion regarding the relationship on giving more scholarship slots to UNIZIK students, and allowing students studying for Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language to visit and stay in China for one year as required before returning to complete their degree programme in Nigeria. Apart from Language, other areas of discussions include Agriculture and Medicine.

The very successful trip may see scholarship opportunities for our students to study in China increase by 100%. In 2016, 54 students were awarded scholarships to study in China; in 2017, 64 students of UNIZIK have commenced studies in China.

More so, during the trip, the VC met with UNIZIK students to reassure them of the University's commitment to their welfare. The VC while commending them for their hardwork and good character, promised that those who successfully complete their studies will be considered for employment in the University.

In two of the Chinese Universities, two of our students who were graded excellent have been employed by the Universities where they studied. One of them is now a staff of the International Office of Heibei Normal University. In appreciation of the VC's efforts for their welfare, the students presented the VC with a plaque and other artistic gifts. It is hoped that these Students will form the bedrock of the future relationship between Nigeria and China.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION INTO PROFESSIONAL AND PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY CHIKE OKOLI CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES (COCES)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admissions to the professional and proficiency Certificate Programmes offered by Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (COCES), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The programmes are aimed at imparting entrepreneurial education and practical skills training and life-long skills in people who desire them and the certificate programmes are expected to run for varying durations as follows:

The members the Health Promotion Research Association of Nigeria (HEPRAN) recently paid a courtesy on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS in his office.The association led by the National President, Prof. Osmond Ene, visited the university to intimate the Vice-Chancellor of their 14th annual Conference.

Receiving the guests, the Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Charles Esimone, FAS reiterated the stance of the University administration in supporting intellectual discourse such as theirs. He stated that such exchange of intellectual ideas, are imperative in the ivory tower. He assured the association of a secure university community emphasizing that the University enjoys maximum security within and outside. He expressed optimism of a robust and fruitful academic discourse.Prof. Ene in his response, thanked the University administration for their support.

Present at the courtesy call include; the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. Nkechi Esomonu, the Chairman Local Organizing Committee of the conference, Prof. A. I Ogbalu among others.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University High School has again soared high. This time, the school came first at the recent Independence Day celebration march held for all secondary schools in Anambra State at the Ekwueme Square.

While speaking to the students, the principal of the school, Lady Chibuzor Victoria Onyejike congratulated the 2016/2017 graduands for performing excellently in both WAEC and NECO.

She also congratulated the newly admitted students who just concluded their orientation. Lady Onyejike encouraged the students to study hard, after which she annouced the closure of admission into UNIZIK High School, for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Again, she thanked the students for making the school proud at the march past.

Effective communication has been noted as being very essential for any working society. This was made known by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Stella C. Okunna at the Health Promotion Research Association of Nigeria (HEPRAN) 14th annual conference held recently. The theme of the conference was "Communication as a vehicle for health promotion in Contemporary Nigeria."

Members from different universities converged at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University auditorium from the 12th to 14th of October,2017 for the conference.

Declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS described the theme of the conference as apt. The Vice Chancellor represented by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Director, UNIZIK 94.1fm, Prof. C.S Okunna who also doubled as the Chairperson, explained that communication is very essential in the society. She added that a breach in communication could lead to chaos and misunderstanding, hence the necessity and importance to carry everyone along and this can only be achieved through effective communication. On the choice of the theme, the communication expert expressed optimism that the conference will benefit all those in health care delivery.

Addressing the participants, the National President of the association, Prof. Osmond Ene stated that the sub-themes have been chosen to allow participants to deliberate on some important areas of communication technology in health promotion. "Communication strategies in health promotion, patient education in health care system, traditional communication systems and health promotion, communication theories and health promotion and the media and health promotion are among the sub-themes", Prof. Ene explained.

Professors A. O Umeanuka and A. I Ogbalu presented the lead papers. Highpoint of the occasion was the launch of the association’s journal.

In its quest to build a befitting secretariat, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch organized the inaugural launching of their Ultra Modern SSANU secretariat at the University Auditorium.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS while commending SSANU for the bold step, stated that with the launch, SSANU-NAU is taking a giant step forward in the discharge of its mandate which hinges on the welfare of its members. Prof. Ahaneku noted that welfare must be considered beyond the narrow prism of wages/emoluments to connote the more holistic perspective of union-driven capacity development of its members and worker productivity. The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the launch and the eventual completion of the secretariat complex would strengthen SSANU-NAU in its strategic role as a partner in the development of the University.

In his remarks, the University Registrar, Dr. Hyacinth Isidienu described the occasion as unique, as it is the first time the University community is called together to support a proposal that had earlier been muted. He commended the association and advised members of staff to live up to their responsibilities in the discharge of their duties.

The Governor of the State, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha commended the association and the University at large for the on-going developmental strides.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Occasion and President, Onitsha Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture, Mr. Donatus Ebubeogu described the project as laudable. Mr. Ebubeogu, represented by Mr. Dominic Ajebo noted that the Chamber would find better ways in partnering with the association to ensure the project to attain fruition.Also commending the lofty idea of the association, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, praised the Vice-Chancellor for his gigantic efforts in ensuring the University ranks high in the world.

Earlier in her address, the Chairperson of SSANU (UNIZIK Chapter), Comrade Njideka Nwangwu explained that the ultra modern proposed building is expected to house office complex, various Departments of the reputable Association, Guests and Recreation house as well as a section of the building mapped out for business.Comrade Nwangwu eulogized the University Management under the past administration of Prof. Boniface Egboka for endorsing and granting approval for the project in 2014. She also thanked immensely the current administration under Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS for providing the necessary platform which has led to the launching of the Ultra modern complex.

In his Vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Arc Osita Okafor thanked all that graced the event.

Grade level 13 officers (chief executive officers in particular) reminded to always check in and out of work on daily basis

The UNIZIK SERVICOM Officers have observed that Grade level 13 officers (Chief Executive Officers in particular) have deliberately and consciously decided not to be checking in and out of work on daily basis.According to the Deputy Registrar (General Administration)/Nodal Officer,Servicom, Mr. Modebelu Victor, such practice tends to neglect the civil service rule which is anchored on discipline and good working etiquette. All officers on Grade level 01 – 13 are hereby reminded and expected to be signing the attendance register regularly, except on an exceptional grounds which the University Management may have authorized or face the consequences.

The UNESCO-UNEVOC Centre for Technical Vocational Education, Training and Research, University of Nigeria Nsukka, in collaboration with innovation in TVET Research Group and other international organisations is organising a 5-day Executive Training Workshop for Managers, Directors, Programme Coordinators, Researchers and Supervisors of skill training/Entrepreneurship Centres in tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria.
