ISLE EDUCATION TRUST

EPWORTH PRIMARY ACADEMY

LOCATION

The school is situated in the small ‘town’ of Epworth (pop. 4000) on the A161 Goole to Gainsborough road, three miles from the M180. Doncaster and Scunthorpe are both approximately twelve miles away. Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Lincoln and Nottingham are all about one hour, or less, drive away. Open countryside backs onto the school playing fields. This is a farming area, mostly arable.

THE SCHOOL

Epworth Primary Academy is part of the newly formed Isle Education Trust (IET) which is a multi-academy trust and at present includes Epworth Primary Academy and South Axholme Academy which is situated adjacent to our site.

The building was opened in 1982 and enjoys an attractive position providing great potential for environmental work. The present one storey red-bricked building, with pitched roof, is one of a series of schools built in the Isle of Axholme in the early 1980’s.

It consists of thirteen teaching areas. The central school hall has a good choice of OPE equipment and stage lighting. Schools meals are served in the hall from the adjoining kitchen. There is a pleasing and well-equipped library and an excellent ITC suite, which is used by the whole school. The administrative area consists of a general office, Principal’s office and Business Manager’s office.

Extensive remodelling of the school building over the last three years has improved the learning environment with discrete teaching areas and small group teaching areas as well as offices for staff and a new staffroom.

Outside is a large playing field and upper and lower school playgrounds. This area has been enhanced with the addition of a ‘Trim Trail’ purchased through fundraising from parents. There is also a sensory garden and woodland walk which is being developed by the School’s Gardening Club.

Recently we have developed an inner courtyard to transform it into an outdoor learning area following a successful bid to Awards for All for £10,000 funding.

Stepping Stones, a local pre-school is also based in school. An extensive outdoor play area is shared with the Reception classes. A Children’s Centre is also based on the school site. We work closely with centre staff to improve the provision of services for local families.

There are approx. 260 students on role in ten classes (two foundation, three KS1 and five KS2).

We are working hard to develop our curriculum to make it engaging and exciting for the students with the introduction of a whole school theme approach as well as enrichment activities.

We offer a good range of after school activities which currently include football, basketball, dance and gardening.
