ISH Members' Newsletter April 2009

Easter symbolizes the birth of new life and reflects the current work of the Society. We are getting ready to roll out an exciting new schedule of CDP events, a designer has been chosen to upgrade the website, we have new leaflets and we have decided on a theme and a keynote speaker for the AGM.

CPD

A team of committee members have been working to pull together all the facets of the CPD route to Registration for the next round of applicants. A whole range of new CPD events is being planned for the autumn.

The workshops, seminars and lecture will be open to both Registration applicants and all other members. The schedule of events will be announced during the summer.

The CPD team working on your behalf includes Julie Baxter, Shirley Lee, Anne Marie O’Bradaigh and Gillian Wray (Registrar). Martin Byrne, who also worked tirelessly on this project, has stepped down as CPD manager for personal reasons but will remain working on the main committee. A huge thank you to Martin for the time and effort he put into the new CPD programme.

In the meantime all the details of the CPD route to Registration are available on our website at:

Mentoring

Mentor training will be a priority over the next few months. A mentoring meeting was held in Athlone on Saturday March 21st to discuss roles, payments, training, geography and the communication between Mentors and Mentorees.

It is planned that the 13 members who trained under the FETAC programme will go on to train others.

Under a new fee structure, from next September, Mentors will be paid a fee of €50 by their Mentorees for each meeting –approximately one hour. Short conversations and emails will be without charge. Mentorees will be expected to attend a minimum of three meetings a year with their Mentor in order to fulfil their Registration requirements..

As part of the new fee arrangements Mentors will have to pay for attending Society run workshops and seminars as a new pay-as-you-go system is being introduced.

Dr Michael Corry Workshop May 9th 2009

End of Life Care

As you know Anne Marie O Bradaigh, from our Politics Group, put together a detailed submission from the ISH to the Hospice Foundation End of Life Forum.

Six members of the ISH recently attended the first meeting of the Forum and took part in workshops to bring greater awareness of the role of Homeopathy in End of Life care.

President Mary McAleese launched the forum and up to 400 delegates attended the meeting which was chaired by broadcaster Marian Finucane.

The ISH representatives at this meeting included Anne Marie O Bradaigh, Declan Mohan, Mary Carroll, Nikki Fitzpatrick, Anne Irwin and LeliaDoolin.

So far almost 70 of our members have expressed an interest in working with hospice facilities.

A Society leaflet has been produced for “End of Life Care” and is available for purchase along with our other leaflets. Please contact the office.

Spiritual Care Conference April 27-28th

The ISH will also take a stand at the first International Spiritual Care Conference in Killarney, Co Kerry on April 27th and 28th which is expected to attract 500 delegates.

“Compassion and Presence: Spiritual Care for the Living and Dying” is the theme of the meeting which is being targeted at a wide range of health care professionals working in areas like palliative care, oncology, psychiatry, nursing, neuroscience and general medicine.

AGM

Mark this date in your diary:-

October 10th 2009.

In keeping with the “End of Life Care” theme, our keynote speaker for our AGM is Homeopath Ali Morrish. Ali has a particular interest in the homoeopathic treatment of people with cancer. She has completed a residential training course at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre and is working as a homeopath in the busy CAM department at St. Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth.

Derek Hennessy who is coordinating this year’s AGM is also organising for stands to be made available for exhibitors at this year’s event.

We have been further considering the location of this year’s AGM because of travelling difficulties for many of our members. Derek is currently looking into this and we will advise our members of the final venue shortly.

Website

We held a tendering process and a series of interviews to choose a web designer to upgrade our current website. Geraldine Walsh, ClodaghSheehy and Sheelagh Behan will be working with the designer to bring you a new-look site with added features.

Our site is constantly updated in both the public and Members only area. In the Members only area you will find Society news, details of CPD events, research news and lots more.

A whole variety of documents are also available for download from the site. They include items from the ISH End of Life submission, Code of Ethics, CPD and Registration details, sabbatical and leave of absence guidelines and Core Criteria to membership and order forms.

Homeopathic Times

Unfortunately the team which was supposed to publish the HT have unable to proceed and we are back to looking for a new group to take over this project.

A background in publishing would be an advantage as whoever takes this over will be responsible for all aspects of the journal including editorial, design, advertising and printing.

Anyone who is interested can contact us by email at
