Dear Client,

We are delighted that the Irlen Method is of benefit to you. The information that follows will assist you should you decide to schedule an appointment for Irlen Filters. More than 90% of those who find that the Irlen overlays (colored plastic sheets) are helpful will find that the Filters (worn like glasses) provide even more help than the overlays. Irlen Filters make it easier to write on white pages, may reduce strain due to fluorescent or bright lighting and can improve your ability to see clear, stable print on white boards and overhead projector screens. Some individuals find improvement in depth perception, perception when driving at night, and a decrease in the frequency and severity of light induced headaches with the use of Irlen Filters. Others find the most improvement with a combination of Filters and overlays. Everyone is unique!

It usually takes between 3 and 4 hours to determine the correct tint for Irlen Filters. It is helpful if you are rested and well nourished. Bring snacks if necessary.

The information below is very important, so please read it carefully. Please feel free to call us or send an e-mail message if you have questions that are not addressed below.

INFORMATION ABOUT LENSES, GLASSES AND FRAMES

Note: It is important to have your vision corrected first before determining what benefits you may receive from Irlen Filters. If you have any concerns about your vision and have not had an examination by a vision care professional within the last 12-18 months, please consider doing so beforeyour appointment.

If you wear prescription lenses:

  • If you have a new prescription be sure that you have worn it for 1 to 3 weeks and have completely adjusted to it.
  • All clients who have prescription lenses must have a clear pair of lenses in their current prescription to wear during the evaluation.

If you wear single-vision lenses you have two options:

Option 1:

  • You may purchase frames and lenses from local eyeglass companies. Bring them to your appointment along with the prescription. Bring the completed and signed Lens Identification letter and a copy of your prescription to your appointment.
  • All lenses need to be made of tintable CR 39 plastic with no coatings (no UV, scratch or photo-gray coating).Polycarbonate lenses cannot be tinted.
  • If you have rimless frames we will send only the lenses into the Irlen Institute

Option 2:

You may purchase frames from a local eyeglass company and purchase single-vision lenses from the Irlen Institute. The Irlen Institute will need to have your pupillary distance (PD) in addition to your prescription.

If you wear bifocal or progressive lenses:

  • You must provide bifocal or progressive lenses. The Irlen Institute cannot provide them. Bring a copy of your prescription and the completed and signed Lens Identification form.
  • If you wear rimless frames we will only send the lenses into the Irlen Institute.

If you do not wear prescription lenses:

  • The Irlen Institute will provide Plano lenses. Bring a pair of frames to the appointment.

COSTS:The diagnostic evaluation costs $360. The cost of tinting the lenses usually runs between $175 and $225 depending on whether you provide prescription lenses or the Irlen Institute provides the lenses. There are extra fees to provide lenses for wrap-around or rimless frames. We are able to take cash, checks, credit cards and most flexible benefit cards.

*We schedule only weekend appointments and work out of our home at 212 Epping Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Please let us know if anyone is allergic to or fearful of dogs and/or cats.

  • Lenses are sent to the Irlen lab in California to be tinted. It usually takes about 3 weeks to get them back.

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT:

  • Screening results from the Irlen Screener (Blue IRPS form and the intake, if completed).
  • A clear pair of lenses in your current prescription (if applicable)
  • Frames with lenses to be tinted (if you are not purchasing single-vision lenses from the Irlen Institute)
