Problem

My team has told me about some workplace hazards and I have identified some myself. I’ve assessed the risks and then prioritised the hazards, so I know which ones are the most serious. Now, I need to work out what to do about them!

Review

Management were quite open about addressing OHS hazards process once it had been explained to them what was involved. There was some initial reluctance from employees to become Committee Representatives although this attitude changed when hazards were eliminated/controlled and their workgroups could see the commitment of the franchise owners to providing a safe workplace.
One of the side benefits of being a committee member was the thorough training undertaken which had a beneficial effect, which is transferable to future employment. After an initial period, the employees took ownership of the risk identification process and over the period of the next few months, the driving force for OHS management came from the shop floor staff and not downwards from the owners/ management.
