Invitation to the international youth conference

Meet me in Citizenship

The European Year of Citizens 2013 is dedicated to the rights that come with EU citizenship. Information Centre of the European Union Europe Direct Maribor would like to invite participate to the international youth conference Meet me in Citizenship. The conference will bring together young people to educate them on their rights, so they will better understand them, better live with them and of course use them. We believe that only an educated youth can change the world for the better.

Frame of reference

As an Information Centre of the European Union, we try to bring the European Union closer to the local community. The EU is based on multicultural cooperation and diversity and our conference incorporates just that. It is a way to bring together youth from different EU Member States, thus giving the participants a diverse playground of ideas and viewpoints.

This will be our sixth conference, following Meet me in Diversity in 2008, Meet me in Creativity in 2009, Meetme in Solidarity in 2010, Meet me, to involve me in 2011 and Meet me today, for tomorrow in 2012, dedicated to the theme of the European year.

European Year of Citizens

The European Year of Citizens 2013 focuses on rights that every EU citizen has. All 500 million Europeans benefit daily from these rights – as does the European economy. The European Year will encourages dialogue at all levels of government, civil society and business, to explore where we – as citizens – want the EU to be by 2020 – in terms of rights, policies and governance.

The rights of EU citizens are enshrined in the Treaty on European Union and complement national rights. If people know about these rights and use them, they benefit as an individual. The EU as a whole feels this benefit, both economically and in terms of citizen support for the EU project.

The 2010 EU Citizenship Report concluded that EU citizens are not benefiting fully from their rights because they are not aware of them – in particular their right to move and reside freely in other EU countries. In the same year, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to make 2013 the European Year of Citizenship. MEPs wanted to boost the debate on EU citizenship and inform EU citizens of their rights.

Saying this, makes the programme of our conference a logical choice:
