Investigation and Experimentation STAR review Name: ______

Suzy Q thinks that cow manure is the best type of fertilizer for her vegetable garden. However, there are other fertilizers on the market such as Miracle-Grow and Scott’s Fertilizer that also make the same claim. (p.638-639)
Describe what Suzy Q can do to test her hypothesis: / What materials will Suzy Q need to carry out her experiment?
Why would it be a good idea for Suzy Q to include a patch that did NOT receive any fertilizer?
What is the manipulated (independent) variable for Suzy Q’s experiment? / What is the responding (dependent) variable for Suzy Q’s experiment?
Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they were getting the sauce that would reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, 30 customers in group A reported having fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported having fewer gas problems. (p.638-639)
Which group is in the control group? / What is the manipulated (independent) variable?
What is the responding (dependent) variable? / What should Mr. Krabbs’ conclusion be?
Why do you think 8 people in group B reported feeling better?

Neither Accurate or Reproducible / Reproducible but Not Accurate / Both Reproducible and Accurate
Seven teams of students want to measure how much time it takes a pendulum to swing back and forth 20 times. Each team repeats the time measurement five times (5 trials). After averaging their trials, each group records its best value in a table for the whole class to see. (p.31)
Team / Time for 20 Swings (s)
1 / 27.5
2 / 28.5
3 / 140.0
4 / 28.0
5 / 28.5
6 / 28.0
7 / 27.5
/ a.  Is this data reproducible? Why or why not? Circle any data that you think should be thrown out to ensure that the data is reproducible. (p.31)
b.  If it is proven that it takes 28.2 seconds for a pendulum to swing back and forth 20 times, are most of these data points accurate? (p.31)
Match the descriptions (A-D) with one of the graphs below: (p.40)
a.  A car was driving at a constant speed then slowed down her speed when she saw a police car nearby.
b.  Stopped at a light, when the light turned green, a skateboarder started to skate faster and faster until he hit a rock and stopped.
c.  A bird flies at a constant speed until it passed by some food. It slowed down and went back to pick up the food.
d.  A man drove to the mall. When he arrived, he searched for his wallet for a few minutes then realized it was at home. He drove home to get the wallet then went back to the mall.
e.  A dog was running at a constant speed, saw a car and started to run after the car at a faster speed.
Use the graph to answer the questions.
(p.39-41) / At what times in the graph, was the car stopped?
Explain how you can tell.
At what times was the car moving but at a constant speed?
Explain how you can tell.
At what time was the car accelerating (speeding up)?
Explain how you can tell.
Where in the graph is it linear? Non-linear? (p.41)
