ABOUT PRNSA

Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) is the primary nonprofit partner of the National Park Service at Point Reyes National Seashore. We work in partnership with the National Park Service to preserve and maintain wildlife habitats, trails and historic sites in this beautiful and unique park. Our year-round environmental education programs help children and adults deepen their understanding of nature and inspire the next generation of park stewards.

SUMMARY
This position will be working for Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) and with the National Park Service Exotic Plant Management Program (EPMT) and will focus on both a large-scale invasive plant project (Scotch broom) as well as data management for the EPMT. The data management portion of the position will work within the ArcGIS environment and assist 10 California national parks with data submissions for their EPMT sponsored treatments. The emphasis of the data management will be on geospatial data collection and storage (via ArcGIS). The position requires the ability to work cordially with data managers, while ensuring data management practices and products meet provided guidelines. The employee may work directly with the National Park Service (NPS) Washington Office data manager on data collection, management, and reporting procedures. Field efforts involve working on a large scale Scotch broom reduction program at Point Reyes National Seashore. The employee will gain experience planning and conducting on-the-ground field treatments that will include both manual and chemical treatments and will play a crucial role in efforts to eradicate Scotch broom from the park. The technician will be an employee of PRNSA, which will act as the direct supervisor of up to two interns. Desired experience and skills: ARCGIS and GPS experience, manual and chemical treatment of non-native, invasive plant species; oversight of contractor crews and volunteer groups; Excel and/or Access database and other word processing software programs. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) desirable.

Duties & responsibilities

●Coordinate data acquisition and assess quality of data; data documentation (metadata); data archiving and security; data retrieval, reporting and dissemination

●Maintain the CaEPMT database and keep in accordance with the National EPMT data reporting criteria Washington Support Office, the California Exotic Plant Management Program and park personnel

●Develop an MS Excel database for tracking submissions

●Assist with control of invasive plant management projects at (primarily) Point Reyes National Seashore. Perform field work involving invasive plant control using manual (weed wrench, Pulaski, handpull) and chemical removal techniques

●Record treatment data in the field using GPS and evaluate treatment efficacy throughout the season

●Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

●Demonstrated knowledge, experience and skills with the most recent versions of ArcGIS and GPS tools (e.g. data dictionaries)

●Strong PC and Microsoft Office skills. Familiarity with Excel, Access, databases, GoogleDocs software is desired.

●Must be willing to be fingerprinted and undergo a criminal background check.

●Experience with invasive plant removal, especially chemical methods

●Attention to detail

●Solid social skills are desired, as this position requires coordination with managers from 10 National Parks to ensure that data management practices and databases meet national standards

Work Schedule

Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5:30 pm, unless otherwise arranged with management.

Physical demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to stand, and/or work on a computer, for long periods, and walk up and down stairs multiple times throughout the day. Ability to work in sometimes extreme weather conditions, particularly heat/sun and cold temperatures. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to operate equipment including weed wrenches, and backpack sprayers for 6 +/- hours. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: The work environment ranges from outdoors in the field to an indoor, occasionally noisy office. The field location has steep hills, unstable ground, and in places has a variety of typical environmental concerns like poison oak, snakes and ticks.

Salary and Benefits: The hourly rate is $15-$20.00/hour depending upon demonstrated skill set. Shared housing may be provided (depends upon the availability of housing at the time of employment).
