Introduction to worship at St Columba’s

We welcome visitors to our services. Please don’t worry about what to do when, what to wear or feel you have to be on your best behaviour. If you need to move around, or leave during the service, that’s just fine. We also enjoy children being present and don’t expect them to be silent and still all the time. We start the service together and, except for family services, children leave for the crèche or Junior Church after about 20 minutes. For information about these, please ask one of the welcome team.

We are delighted to welcome you!

Please sign the visitor’s book in the vestibule.

On the last Sunday of most months the service includes communion. This is open to others from different denominations.

In general, if you are able to stand comfortably, you are invited to stand for the Bible coming in at the start of the service and during hymns (except offering). We usually remain seated for prayers.

The page numbers for the readings refer to the Bibles in the pews. The Old Testament readings are at in the first section of the Bible, the New Testament readings are towards the back.

The version of the Lord’s Prayer that we use is:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

Forever, Amen.

Hymn 465 - Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;

Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
thou my best thought in the day or the night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my Wisdom, be thou my true Word;
I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father: thine own I would be;
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight;
be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
thou my soul’s shelter, and thou my high tower;
raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor earth’s empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou, and thou only, the first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of Heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Benediction

Offering Prayer

Hymn 694 - Brother, sister, let me serve you,

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
and companions on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping;
when you laugh I’ll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow
till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

Call to worship

Hymn 154 - O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder

O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy power throughout the universe displayed:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
‘How great thou art, how great thou art!’
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
‘How great thou art, how great thou art!’

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look up from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze:

And when I think that God his Son not sparing,
sent him to die — I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home — what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Prayer of Approach and Lord’s prayer

Time with the Children

Hymn 528 - Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord;
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.
Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved, as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, only light;
and where there’s sadness, ever joy. Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved, as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive;
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

Offering Hymn 238 - Lord, bring the day to pass

Lord, bring the day to pass
when forest, rock, and hill, the beasts, the birds, the grass,
will know your finished will:
when we attain our destiny
and nature lives in harmony.

Forgive our careless use
of water, ore, and soil — the plenty we abuse
supplied by others’ toil:
save us from making self our creed,
turn us towards each other’s need.

Help us, when we release
creation’s secret powers, to harness them for peace,
our children’s peace and ours:
teach us the art of mastering
in servant form, like Christ our King.

Creation groans, travails,
futile its present plight, bound — till the hour it hails
God’s children born of light:
that we may gain our true estate,
come, Lord, new heavens and earth create.
