Monday, August 20th:

· Learning Target: I can take Cornell Notes to document important information found in textbook reading assignment HSS 6.1.

· Materials:

o Social Studies textbook

o KWHL Chart

o Cornell Notes paper

o Cornell Notes scoring rubric

o Unit 1 Folders

· Summary of Classroom Activities:

o Review how to complete the Job Description project, worksheet, p. 21.

o Review Cornell Notes rubric and note-taking template.

o Guided Reading and Note-Taking: Chapter 1, section 1, pp. 6-11.

o Peer Evaluation of Notes using the Cornell Notes rubric.

o Suggest areas of improvement.

o Turn-in notes and Peer Evaluation.

· Differentiation (ELD, GATE, Special Education): Complete notes independently and highlight information useful for the Job Description project.

· Assessment: Students complete notes for the first lesson covering all three main ideas, reading check questions, and analysis skills questions.

· Re-Teach: Teacher Reflection: Students in period one had many questions about the Job Description project. Only completed notes for main idea #1.

· Tuesday, August 21st:

— Learning Target: I can imagine a tribe or group of people that might have lived a long time ago and write a short essay about their culture. (Study Guide Challenge Activity) HSS 6.1.

· Materials:

o Social Studies textbook

o Study Guide activity worksheet, pp. 2-3

o Lined paper and pencils

· Summary of Classroom Activities:

o Assessment Questions, p. 11: Answer each question in complete sentences then trade/grade/discuss.

o Chapter 1:1 Study Guide, worksheet pp. 2-3. Read and answer reading guide questions. Use critical thinking skills to complete the challenge activity by writing a short essay about an imaginary culture.

· Differentiation (ELD, GATE, Special Education): Draw a map if the area where your imaginary culture lived that would be useful to an archaeologist seeking to learn new information.

· Assessment: Study Guide will be completed with 70% accuracy.

Wednesday, August 22nd:

· Learning Target: I can create a study plan for studying for my social studies test on Thursday.

· Materials:

o Social Studies text

o KWHL Chart

o Sample flash cards

o Review notes from chapter 1, section 1 test (put on PPT)

· Summary of Classroom Activities:

o What do I know about studying for a test?

o What do I need to know?

o Writing a Study Plan:

o Identify the key terms and people you need to know.

o Make flash cards.

o Practice writing a summary of what you learned (PPT writing guide).

o Make it fun—study with a friend.

o Relay Review:

§ Two teams.

§ One player per team.

§ Teams give clues to concept or terms selected by teacher.

o Complete KWHL Chart.

o Homework: Study for Chapter 1:1 test.

· Differentiation (ELD, GATE, Special Education): Create a new review game.

· Assessment: How do you know if they got it? Students will complete a study plan and explain how it will be used to study for the chapter 1:1 test.

Thursday, August 23rd:

· Learning Target: I can write a letter describing the opening of King Tut’s tomb and the things Howard Carter found inside.

· Materials:

o Social Studies textbook

o Copy of chapter 1:1 test

o Copy of Howard Carter biography

· Summary of Classroom Activities:

o Chapter 1, Section 1 test.

o Howard Carter biography, worksheet pp. 3-4: Imagine that you are a member of Carter’s excavation team.

· Differentiation (ELD, GATE, Special Education): Illustrate King Tut’s tomb and the things found inside.

· Assessment: How do you know if they got it? Students will write a letter including information learned from the biographical fact sheet.

· Re-Teach: Teacher Reflection:

Friday, August 24th:

· Learning Target: I can make-up hieroglyphic symbols and write a two or three sentence hieroglyphic message.

· Materials:

o Social Studies textbook

o Jean-Francois Champollion biography, worksheet pp. 5-6

o Unit one folders

· Summary of Classroom Activities:

o Turn-in Job Description project.

o Jean-Francois Champollion biography, worksheet pp. 5-6.

o Update unit folder work.

· Differentiation (ELD, GATE, Special Education): Use hieroglyphics to create a 5 point test about Jean-Francois Champollion.

· Assessment: How do you know if they got it? Students will complete the biographical fact sheet and the hieroglyphic sentences with a key to solve.
