Course Description and Objectives

Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of every child from kindergarten through grade 12. Therefore, every student should have the opportunity to participate in a quality physical education program. It is the role of quality physical education programs to help students develop health-related fitness, physical competence in movement activities, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes toward physical activity so that they can adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles. Quality programs are also important because they provide learning experiences that meet a student’s developmental needs, which in turn helps improve the mental alertness, academic performance, readiness, and enthusiasm for learning.

WEEK / STANDARD / DESCRIPTION
1-3 / 6 / Demonstrates a level of competency, advancing to a level of proficiency in a particular skill, and performs skills with consistency in the appropriate setting such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.
4-6 / 7 / Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.
7-9 / 8 / Displays appropriate etiquette, interaction, care of equipment, and safety during an activity such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.
10-12 / 9 / Identifies and applies critical elements essential to competent performance in activities such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.
13-15 / 10 / Describes principles of training and conditioning appropriate to specific sports such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.
16-18 / 11 / Appreciates the influence in participation in physical activity as it relates to culture, ethnic, gender, and physical diversity in sports such as basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, or volleyball.

Grading

Dress and Participation = 60%

Test and Quizzes = 40%

Final Grade = 100%

  • Final grade will be the culmination of both dress and participation added to test and quizzes.
  • Each day is worth 100 points for dress and participation. If we dress out 35 times in nine weeks a student could earn a potential 3500 points for dress and participation. This would equal a 100 average.
  • Tests are subject to be skills or written test.
  • Test and quizzes are subject to follow a lesson or standard.

**Example**

Student “A” gets a 95% for dress and participation. Students “A” gets a 76% test and quiz average. Student “A’s” final grade would be:

Dress and Participation Average - 95% * .60= 57

Test and Quizzes Average- 76% * .40= 30.4

Final Grade Average- 87.4 or 87%

MAKE-UP POLICY

All point deductions/assignments can be made up within 4 school days.

The make -up procedure is as follows…

  • Make appointment with your coach the day before.
  • Be on time and prepared.
  • Make Up’scan be for any absence from class during the semester. A no dress, truancy, or an unexcused absence cannot be made up.
  • Criteria for physical activity make-up: 20 minute workout program set by the teacher

No Make-ups will be allowed during the last week of each 9 weeks.

DRESSING OUT

  • classroom clothing should not be worn while participating in physical activities
  • boys must keep their shirts on at all times
  • clothes must be clean and decent…no mid-drift tops, short-shorts, ripped shorts or ripped shirts
  • shorts are to be worn on the waist. NO UNDERWEAR SHOWING!
  • it is recommended that all your belongings be labeled
  • no hats, flip flops, sandals, or boots of any kind are allowed in Physical Education class

MEDICAL CONCERNS

Please inform instructors of any medical issues you may have. If you are unable to participate

you must have a written excuse from your parent/guardian and/or physician (list phone numbers). Any student who needs to be excused for more than 1 day must obtain a medical excuse from a physician. Students who are medically excused are still required to dress out. You are expected to make-up work missed.

GUIDELINES AND POLICIES

  • This is a participation class. Attendance is very important.
  • Students are tardy if they enter the gym after the tardy bell rings.
  • Immediately check-in with your instructor when you enter the gym.
  • After roll call instructor will dismiss class to go to locker rooms. Students will have 8 minutes to dress out. All students are required to report to the locker room whether dressing out or not. Return to gym when released and line up in exercise formation. Students line up in exercise formation whether participating or not.
  • Students are not allowed to participate unless dressed out properly and must walk the entire period to avoid additional points being deducted. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO SIT DURING CLASS UNLESS INSTRUCTEDTO DO SO BY A COACH. Students will have 10 minutes to dress and shower after the activity.
  • After getting dress, students will report to their roll call spot and wait for the dismissal bell.
  • No food or drink in gym or locker rooms. Water is allowed. NO GUM OR SUNFLOWER SEEDS!
  • Profanity and/or obscene gestures do not display self-control and will not be tolerated.
  • Horseplay is absolutely prohibited. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
  • NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES! NO CELL PHONES. iPODS, HEADPHONES or MP3 players.
  • Report all injuries to the instructor.

LOCKER ROOM PROCEDURES/EXPECTATIONS

• Locks and lockers are issued – do not bring any locks from home (they will be removed)

  • Place your lock only on the locker assigned.
  • Your P.E. locker is for clothes and personals only. It is not to be used as a locker for books. You will not be allowed to return between classes and at lunch.
  • All valuables (clothing, jewelry, books, etc.) should be placed in lockers and kept locked at all times. Nothing should be left out on the benches.
  • The school and staff will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items left out on the benches or
    for any items taken from lockers (locked or unlocked). It is recommended that you DO NOT SHARE your locker combination with ANYONE!!!
