Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

What:Introduction toOutdoor Leader Skills (OLS) training course. This is a weekend

training course set in the field. You will live the patrol method by camping, cooking, and operating as a patrol while learning the same basic outdoor skills that your Scouts learn as they advance from Tenderfoot to First Class. The goal is to make you more comfortable with these skills before you teach them to your Scouts. Somewhere along the way, expect to have some fun! If you have not been through basic training (Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training) go on-line to to complete “Boy Scout Fast Start Training.” Click on the link to “Leader Training.” It will really help!

Who:For all Scoutmasters (SM), Assistant Scoutmasters (ASM) and adult leaders who work

directly with Boy Scouts.

Why:Because every boy deserves a trained leader. All SM's and ASM's are required to

complete the on-line course This is Scouting, Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, Youth Protection, and Outdoor Leader Skills to: (1) earn their “TRAINED” emblems (among the many requirements forthe Quality Unit Award, a SM must be “TRAINED”); (2) be eligible to earn their SM's Key Award or Scouter’s Training Award; and, (3) be eligible to take “Wood Badge for the 21st Century.” Troop Committee members must complete New Leader Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge (available on-line) to qualify for the same.

What to Bring: Equipment details can be found on pages 224-227 of the Boy Scout Handbook,

11th edition. Bring your Annual Health and Medical Record, Parts A and C.(find on-line at Bring a 3-ring, 1” binder. Bring your Scout Handbook and a camp chair..

Other important information:

Dinner will not be provided Friday evening. Please eat before arriving or bring a sack supper.

Lunch will not be served Sunday. We will dismiss at about 12:30 p.m.

All other meals are provided in the cost of the course.

Participants must provide their own sleeping bags, tents, and personal eating gear. Bring a camp chair. (The picnic tables have been removed.)

Directions:

Ifyouare coming from Birmingham:
Take I-20 E (towards Atlanta) and take the BROMPTON Exit, #147.Turn RIGHT at the end of the exit ramp.

  • Drive past a Chevron station on your left.
  • Immediately after the Chevron station, TURN LEFT onto HIGHWAY 78.
  • Turn RIGHT onto WINNATASKA ROAD.This is a small and winding road.
  • Turn RIGHT onto WINNATASKA DRIVE, at the large wooden sign.
  • Go through the entrance gate and up the hill.
  • The gravel road is in disrepair. Straddle the ruts and you will be okay.
