COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide an introduction to information technology concepts and careers as well as the impact information technology has on the world, people, and industry and basic web design concepts. The content includes information technology career research; operating systems and software applications; electronic communications including e-mail and Internet services; basic HTML, DHTML, and XML web commands and design; emerging technologies, and Web page design. If taken as part of the Information Technology program (8207300), after successful completion of this course, students will have met Occupational Completion Point A, Information Technology Assistant, SOC Code 15-1041.

ATTENDANCE, ASSIGNMENTS, AND GRADES

Students are responsible for all attendance, assignments, and grades. If a student is absent, he/she needs to take care of notes to attendance on their time before or after school not during class. If a student is absent, the student needs to make arrangements with Ms. Wright before or after school to see about making up the assignments. If time allows during class, then and only then will Mrs. Wright discuss grades during class time. Listen for announcements during class if grades can be discussed during class.

Students are required to have a Skyward account, because they are responsible for their grades. They should check their grades regularly to see if they have any zeroes or “69s” or below. If they do, they need to make arrangements with Ms. Wright to see when and how they can make up assignments before or after school.

The students will work with the main components of Microsoft Office 2013 Suite: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, & the Web.

By the end of the course students will have completed the following assignments/test:

  • Projects in the Microsoft Office 2013 Suite
  • Group activities exploring information technology.
  • Written tests will tentatively be scheduled for Thursdays and lab production tests will tentatively be scheduled for Fridays.

The students will have the opportunity to test for the CIW Professionals certification: they will gain knowledge and skills in a specific IT discipline. This mid-level CIW job-role certification validates the certificant's knowledge in foundational IT skills as well as more advanced skills in a job role of choice. CIW Professional certifications are best suited to individuals who are now performing jobs or pursuing careers in mid-level technical positions.

Homework will be to study for tests and complete subject area vocabulary. All class assignments will be completed in class and saved to the students’ drive on the school server. If work is not completed, student can access their student’sdrive from home by launching the Internet and going to the following Website: Signing in is the same assigning into the school’s computers.

COURSE COMPETENCIES:
At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to perform the following:
  • The student will describe the various hardware and software elements of a microcomputer system and discuss basic Windows and Office terminology.
  • The student will describe information technology.
  • The student will describe the many operating systems.
  • The student will become capable in using the mouse, opening and closing a window, running a program, and sizing windows.
  • The student will learn how to use Explorer to manage the computer’s files and folders (limited) and describe the basics of navigating the Internet, Intranet, and the WWW.
  • The student will demonstrate proficiency in using HTML command.
  • The student will learn how to use the various applications in the Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and the Web.
  • The student will learn to integrate real-world activities among the Office programs.
  • The student will demonstrate page design applicable to the WWW.
  • The student will demonstrate the use of digital sound and specialized software applications.

COURSE FCAT READING:

Students will be required to participate in daily or weekly reading and writing activities to increase comprehension and vocabulary as it relates to the FCAT test. The business department is to help increase FCAT achievement and help to improve overall FCAT scores at East Ridge High. Students will receive a grade for each FCAT assignment given. Each student is asked to bring a book to class for reading when done with class assignments. An article for Course Required Reading and Writingwill be assignedeach Wednesday and will start August 24, 2014

GRADING POLICY:

The Lake County School Board policy has mandated the following grading scale:

100 – 90 / = / A / Outstanding Progress
89 – 80 / = / B / Above Average Progress
79 – 70 / = / C / Average Progress
69 – 60 / = / D / Lowest Acceptable Progress
59 – 0 / = / F / Failure

There will be a minimum of seven (10) grades documented for each 9-week grading period. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible for interscholastic activities.

A student is considered tardy to class after the bell unless excused by a note from school personnel.

Procedures and Routines

Late Bell – student’s log-on to their computers and complete bell work (Microtype 3.0 exercises) to improve typing skills..
Book bags – all book bags are to be placed on a table or in front of your feet underneath your workstation.
Attendance – teacher will take attendance while bell work is being completed.
Bathroom Policy – Each student is required to carry one of Ms. Wright’s classroom passes. No passes are allowed during the first or final ten minutes of each period.
Group Work and Social Activities – the teacher will establish when these activities will take place; in the meantime, each student is to work quietly and independently.
Seating Arrangements – seats will be assigned; however; Ms. Wright reserves the right to change seats if a need arises.
The “Quiet” Signal – when you hear the cow bell and spoken word (students listen for a minute, please), you are expected to stop what you are doing and pay attention to what is going to be said.
Visitors – if any visitors come to our class you are to remain on task.
Dismissal Bell – all students are to remain in their chairs until teacher dismissal (no congregating at doorway).
