Homework 2
Due Date: 04/20/2016
Question 1.
The three table-like figures below show portions of three raster data sets for a study area. The spatial resolution of the raster data sets is 30 by 30 meters. The data sets represent species of trees, drainage level, and parks respectively. You are asked to find suitable locations (cells) where grow “J’ trees, the drainage levels are greater than 1, and the parks are at least 30 meters away.
(a) Develop a flowchart showing the logical steps (GIS modeling) of solving this problem.
(b). Carry out the operations and produce the final suitability data in raster format (Let’s use S for suitable cells, and U for unsuitable cells). Please submit the resulting raster data of each intermediate step, and also the final result. You can use the same type of table-like figures for all of these.
Note: For your convenience, the hypothetical original datasets are also provided in the attached excel file (Q1 raster problem.xls). You can provide your solution by filling out the cells in the xls file directly.

Question 2.
Scenario: Clarke county considers adding a new middle school serving children aged between 11 and 13 who live within 2 miles from the school. Six possible locations are proposed. There are three criteria to be used to make the final decision.
· First, the new school should be at least 0.5 mile away from a state highway.
· Secondly, the school location must be at least two miles away from existing schools.
· Thirdly, the best school location serves the most juvenile population within 2 miles of the school location.
You are asked to develop a GIS modeling flowchart of the logical steps for carrying out the project. You do not need to implement all steps. The specific provided data and tasks are listed below.
Data:
The provided dataset include:
· Highway shape file
· Existing School shape file
· NewSchoolCandidates.xlsx– street addresses of the six proposed school locations.
· Street shapefile
· Census population data in shapefile
Documents to be submitted
· A map of the 0.5 mile buffer of the highways, with new candidate school locations shown and labeled ;
· A map of 2 mile buffer of existing schools, with candidate school locations shown and labeled ; when you create the buffer, is it better to choose the option of “Dissolve”? Why or Why not? Provide a short explanation.
· A map of the 2 miles buffers around the candidate school locations with census tract boundaries overlaid. Be sure to modify the transparency setting so that both layers are visible (right click on the layer … Property…Display)
· A GIS modeling flowchart for this GIS analysis project.
Note: the flowchart is a conceptual model of designed logical steps to carry out the analysis task. There is no need to create a software-dependent GIS model in ArcGIS.
Tips:
· You will need to geocode the candidate locations. For your convenience, the street shapefile is provided. You can also use the locator that was created in one of the labs this semester.
· Although the procedure of calculating the population in the 2-mile buffer areas does not need to be carried out for this homework (you have done a similar thing in Assignment-1), you do need to include the steps in the GIS modeling flowchart.
