Introduction to ArcGIS9.2
System Requirements & Class Setup for PC Computers
May2007
Who should read this document: The System Administrator or other individuals responsible for setting up the workstations used in the training.
This document will assist you in setting up your training room for the upcoming Introduction to ArcGIS class. The class is intended for Windows 2000 or Windows XP on a RIS’d operating system using ArcGIS version 9.2.
I. CONTACTS
For technical issues contact Pat Campagna (503) 808-6550 or Jeremy Hruska (503) 808-6433.
Pat Campagna or Jeremy Hruska will be the instructor for the class. A week before the class, the instructor will be working with you to answer any questions you may have about the training setup. The instructor also needs time for testing the exercises. So please have the training computers completely setup one full day prior to class, so the instructors can come in and verify the settings. The class is three days, starting at 8 AM, and stopping at 5 PM.
II. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
NOTE: The following is the ideal setup. If these procedures do not work at your district, inform the instructor what changes you intend to make to see if they will work.
A. Workstations
It is best if there is one computer for each student, and one computer for the instructor.
All computers need to be net mounted to a network connection.
All workstations must have a C:\tmp.
The exercises were made using a monitor resolution to 1024x768. Please verify this setting for all monitors used in this class.
The system requirements of the software are as follows:
- Operating System: Windows 2000 or Windows XP on a RIS’d machine
- CPU Speed: PC with a fast Pentium chip (1.0 GHz or higher recommended)
- Memory/RAM: 512 MB(minimum) or higher
- True color monitor with a minimum of 16 MB video card; greater than 256 color depth.
- Swap Space: Paging File is determined by operating system. Set to a minimum of 500 MB. Utilizing Windows Terminal Server technology may require more, especially depending on the number of clients running off that server.
- Disk Space: 1.2 GB
- 100mb Network connection
B. Software Installation
The exercises will only work with ArcGIS version 9.2. Install the full (ArcInfo licensed) version ofWorkstation and Desktop ArcGIS with the latest Service Pack (at a minimum use SP1).
You can verify the address of the license server through ESRI’s Desktop Administration program (under the ArcGIS program group).
C. Printers
The students and the instructor will need access to a printer, preferably color.
D. MS PowerPoint, MS Word, Live Meeting, Internet Explorer, and WinZip.
All computers need Live Meeting and Internet Explorer loaded. If needed, set the Internet Explorer as the default browser. ArcMap accesses the Internet via IE. If your district does not permit training computer access to the Internet, please inform the instructor.
NOTE: All training computers will need the Live Meeting plug in. This will require administration access.
In addition, the instructor's computer needs WinZip, MS Power Point , and MS Word.
III. CLASS SETUP
A. Logins and System Support
A person with administrator rights to the training PC must be available during the time the instructor is testing the training computers. If training-login accounts are available at the training site, then students can use the training accounts. Please provide to the instructor the user name and password for each training account. If training-login accounts are unavailable, each student will use there own login for the class.
If the computers cannot be tested using the students logins on the Monday before the class, testing may occur at the very beginning of class on Tuesday.
! When the students launch ArcGIS, the software should appear out-of-the box (i.e., factory settings)—without any user customizations !
For the class to work correctly, the directory containing ArcGIS-user preferences and software templates must either be deleted or renamed (if the student is using his or her own computer in training, then rename the following directory, and reset it after the training is complete):
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ESRI
Optional Desktop shortcuts for training:
It would be helpful to have the following shortcuts available as icons on each student’s desktop:
- ArcMap (located at "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\ArcMap.exe”)
- ArcCatalog (located at "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\ArcCatalog.exe")
B. Read/Write Access
The students and instructor will need read and write access to the C:\tmp folder.
C. Class Data Installation
Class data, lectures, and exercises can be found through the Forest Service Geospatial Training and Awareness siteat . Course CDs can be requested by contacting Stu Gregory at 801-975-3833 or . Alternatively, they can also be found on a BLM internal ftp server (ftpint.or.blm.gov), which can be accessed with Internet Explorer at ftp://ftpint.or.blm.gov/training/arcgis/intro9_2/. Once connected to the FTP server, navigate to the Training\arcgis\intro9_2 folder. Download the intro_arcgis9_2_class_data.zip file.
Unable to download the zip file? Contact the instructor to send CDROMs with the class data.
Extract the intro_arcgis9_2_class_data.zip file into the C:\tmp\intro_arcgis folder. After extraction, the C:\tmp\intro_arcgis folder has three new folders called gis, results, and workspace, which each contain files and folders needed for the class. All directories and files under C:\tmp\intro_arcgisneed READ/WRITE access. Lecture Notes (PowerPoints) and Exercises (Word documents) should be extracted into the intro_arcgis folder as well.
IV. INSTRUCTOR'S NEEDS
The instructor will need the following materials:
- video projector for instructor's computer and video screen
- whiteboard, markers, and eraser
- For the students, pens, pencils, highlighters, and Post-It tags (or notes).
