Course Objectives

How do actors develop charismatic three-dimensional presence? We will illuminate the basics of performance in body, voice and action and explore what techniques work for your personal acting process. We will use tools for becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable onstage and for communicating clearly and expressively in solos (monologues), duets (scenes) and group (ensemble) activities. Through training in Alexander Technique, various vocal/physical techniques, long-standing Stanislavski approaches and introductory Viewpoints, we will examine the use of ourselves and connect and communicate wholeheartedly with collaborators, audiences, objects and space in our environment. Through the elements of theatre (props, set, lights, etc.), we will discover the life of the character and how to maintain focus under multiple watchful eyes.

Attendance Policy

The decision to take this class includes the decision to be present every time it meets. You are granted two absences for the semester. Each additional absence drops your grade two points. Failure to attend on a performance day will result in a failing grade assignment.

Clothing

Wear warm, comfortable clothing, such as, yoga wear, t-shirts and sweat pants that you can move in. Do not wear skirts, jeans, jewelry or perfume/cologne. Tie your hair back away from your face. Unless it is particularly cold, we will be working in bare (clean!) feet.

Beginning of Class

Remove your shoes before you enter the room. Leave gum and other drinks outside. You may bring water. Approach the learning space with a focused outlook. Enter class quietly and ready yourself for working with a positive attitude. Place your bags and shoes in the designated area and wait in the center of the room. Feel free to move in gentle ways that your body needs as you are waiting. Each class will begin with five minutes of meditation.

End of Class:

Please return furniture, props and chairs to their storage positions and double check that our room is clean of belongings and trash. We are all responsible for taking care of the space.

Academic Dishonesty:

Cheating, plagiarism or otherwise obtaining grades under false pretenses constitute academic dishonesty according to university code. Academic dishonesty is not tolerated and penalties can include canceling a student’s enrollment without a grade and giving an F for the course or for the assignment.

Cell Phone

Please turn off your cell phone before entering the room. Secretive videotaping or audio recording is prohibited by law and Board of Regents policy. You may video or audio tape a class with the permission of myself and the entire class. In order to accommodate students with disabilities, some students have been given permission to record class lectures and discussions. Under these circumstances, students should understand that their comments during class may be recorded.
