Introduction to 2D Art

Scope and Sequence

Geared towards introducing students to a wide range of Two - Dimensional Art, this course uses the elements and principles of 2-D art as its guide. Focusing on basic skills and a range of materials, projects will be based on utilizing one or more of the elements and principles to to create a strong drawing, painting, or other 2 Dimensional work. This course will provide the foundation for Drawing and Painting I and II, Advanced Art, and AP Art.

Units

  1. Understanding the elements and principles (4 days)
  2. Students will define and apply each of the elements of art in their sketchbook.
  3. Students will create a page for each of the elements that showcases a visual representation of the term and other pertinent information to that element.
  4. Students will use a variety of basic media to complete this work.
  5. Students will take a test over the material.

  1. Still life, value and drawing(8 days)
  2. Students will learn the basics of drawing on the right side of the brain.
  3. Students will learn basic pencil drawing techniques.
  4. Students will learn to draw 3 dimensional objects on a flat surface.
  5. Student will learn to apply value with a variety of pencils to create depth and dimension.
  6. Students will choose a composition from a still life, they will shade their work to show the light source, depth and dimension.
  7. Students will identify artists whose work focus on value as the central element.
  8. Students will participate in class critiques to discuss their work.

  1. Pattern and Line (2 days)
  2. Students will learn that there are a variety of lines and line qualities and how to create value using line.
  3. Students will integrate several principles of art with a variety of line and line qualities.
  4. Students will create compositions entirely of black lines
  5. Students will learn about art as a type of therapy, and how the definition of art is always changing and growing.

  1. Oil pastel composition (8 Days)
  2. Students will learn how to create art that can tell a story/show character.
  3. Students will learn how to incorporate color into composition to create interest, contrast and unity.
  4. Students will learn how to create and photograph a still life.
  5. Students will learn to use oil pastels effectively.
  6. Students will participate in class critiques.

  1. Pen and Ink Fantasy Doors (6 Days)
  2. Students will learn a variety of pen and ink techniques
  3. Students will learn about a variety of careers in art – Gaming design, movie and set design, etc. and the connection between art and storytelling.
  4. Students will learn how historical research can influence art
  5. Students will learn how to integrate visual sources and their own creativity and imagination to create a strong composition.
  6. Students will use pen and ink techniques to complete their compositions of fantasy doors and the land around them.

  1. Acrylic Painting (8 Days)
  2. Students will learn about the art periods and styles from Romanticism to present day including the periods; Realism, Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Post Modernism and Deconstructivism. (students will do research and teach the class about their art period)
  3. Student will learn the basics of painting with acrylic paint.
  4. Students will utilized decision making skills to choose a style and create a composition in that style(one specific artist but not copying one of their paintings)
  5. Students will draw and paint this composition.
  6. Students will critique their own and one of their classmates works.

  1. Watercolor Techniques (3 Days)
  2. Students will learn about the unique properties of watercolor paint.
  3. Students will practice all the various ways to apply watercolor paint.
  4. Students will learn about atmospheric perspective.
  5. Students will create simple landscapes with watercolor paint.
