The programs listed below are opportunities for students. Only those noted will hire district staff for summer positions. If you are interested in applying for a summer program position, the deadline for accepting all applications or emails of interest is 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2016 or until positions are filled. Please note that any individual serving in a certified professional position for summer school will be paid at the FY 16 state-based hourly rate. Any individual serving in a classified role for summer school will be paid at his/her true hourly rate.

  1. Extended School Year (ESY)

The system's Extended School Year (ESY) program is for identified special education students.The program will run three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), from 8:00-12:00 (staff hours).If you are interested in applying for one of the summer school positions, please complete the attachment above.   1. High School Summer School Math Academy

Program Leader: Robert Boyd

Location: Otwell Middle School

Date: Monday through Thursday, June 6-30, 2016

Summer School Math Academy – GSE Algebra I, GSE Geometry, GSE Algebra II and Pre-calculus will be offered for recovery credit only. Only teachers with certification should apply. Experienced teachers of these subjects will be given preference. Some positions will also require additional certifications in Special Education or ESOL.The program will run Monday through Thursday,June 6-30, 2016from 8:00–1:00 (staff hours). Students will register through their school counselor and pay $300 for a course.

Language and Science Academy Cancelled

Date: Monday through Thursday, June 6-30, 2016

Language and Science Academy – 9th Grade English, 10th Grade English, Physical Science, and Biology will be offered for recovery credit only. The program will run Monday through Thursday,June 6-30, 2016 from 8:00–1:00 (staff hours). Students will register through their school counselor and pay $300 for a course.

Georgia Milestones for the Math Academy will be administered June 22-24 at Otwell Middle School. District-wide testing for the Georgia Milestones is scheduled for June 22-24at West Forsyth High School. District-wideGeorgia Milestones testing is for retest, make-up, test-out, or validation. Details will be available through the counseling office.

  1. Georgia Virtual School (GAVS)

Georgia Virtual School (GaVS) will be holding classes this summer. This summer school program is for initial and recovery credit for most core classes in the areas of English, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Foreign Languages. Some electives are offered as well.

See for a complete list of course offerings. High School Course Tuition is $250 for half Carnegie unitand $500 for full Carnegie unit. Middle school courses are $250 per course.All summer middle school courses offered by GAVS are considered remedial.

Students should contact their school counselor to enroll. Courses are not taught by Forsyth County Schools educators; however, each student will have an FCS facilitator available during the summer session. All questions and concerns about GaVS courses should be directed to Jason Naile at or 770-887-2461 x 203362. AccELLerate is a language camp for rising 9th-12th grade ESOL students. Students enroll in one of four 55.00 level ESOL language acquisition courses and earn .5 elective credit upon successful completion of course requirements. The program will run July 11-15, 2016 from 9:00-4:00. Teachers holding certification in both English (6-12) and ESOL should send an e-mail directly to Jamie Rife, expressing interest including certificate number and phone number.

Mountain Education Charter High School (MECHS) is a collaborative effort of Elbert, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union, and White County School Systems. The MECHS collaborative organization also operates sites in Habersham and Stephens Counties. MECHS is an academic, self-paced, individualized, evening high school that serves students who are seeking a non-traditional school environment and who desire a Georgia high school diploma.

MECHS also serves students who need to make up missed credit from their regular high school, enabling them to stay on academic track and graduate with their peers. MECHS is a year-round high school that offers all Georgia required curriculum courses as well as a variety of vocational courses and state-mandated testing. Students should check with their school counselors for more information. Tuition for summer recovery classes is $150 per course.

Title I Summer Programs are staffed by teachers within each Title I school.

Kinder Camp / Chestatee & Cumming Elementary Schools / June 6-10
9:00 -12:00 PM / Kinder Camp exposes students with little to no Prekindergarten/preschool experience who are entering Kindergarten in Title I schools to the classroom/school experience, provides direct instruction of the GELDS standards of early learning that are taught in Prekindergarten/preschool and necessary for a successful Kindergarten school year. Eligible students are identified through a screening process during Kindergarten registration.

3:00-4:00pm / Camp Cougar is a week-long summer program on site that is offered to at-risk students in rising third, fourth, and fifth grades and will extend off site digitally throughout the summer months. It will address specific grade-level science standards while completing cross curricular reading, writing, and technology activities. TINA, a multiple criteria rank order will be used to identify the students who will participate in the summer camp. Rising 4th graders will participate in Summer Digital Learning by receiving a Chrome book in order to complete science and ELA related activities posted by their teacher on itslearning.

4:00 – 6:00 PM / Page Turners is designed to provide Title I students and their parents in grades K-5 with an opportunity to visit the Chestatee Media Center to promote retention of reading skills. Teachers will lead read alouds, group discussions, games, conferences and activities related to the books that children are reading. Library books will be available for students and parents to read together, computer access will be available, and the parent resource room will be open for check out of support resources.

Teacher Office Hours TBD / Bulldog Bridge Camp is a Title I program for rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade who need an additional opportunities to review math skills taught in the previous year for concept/standards mastery. Students will participate in Bulldog Bridge Camp online through itslearning and during an onsite camp in July at Otwell. Multiple criteria will be used to identify students who are eligible for the program.

10:15am-12:15pm / Summer Book Club is a Title I program in partnership with the local library that is designed to support struggling readers during the summer months by providing regular opportunities to read. Students will visit a library branch once a week for six weeks, check out books, and receive instruction on reading comprehension. Multiple criteria will be used to identify students who are eligible for the program.
Mustang Travelers: Summer Learning Expedition / Little Mill Middle / June 6-July 22

3:00-5:00pm / The Mustang Travelers: Summer Learning Expedition will target at risk rising 6th graders as determined by multiple criteria. This session will introduce students to their teachers, provide an opportunity to distribute technology resources, review the program, administer a pre-test, and begin implementing the curriculum with interactive hands-on activities. Online learning sessions will take place beginning the week of June 6th and will continue through the week of July 18th, taking a 1 week break during the week of July 4th. These online sessions will use the acceleration approach, exposing students to 6th grade standards in each of the four content areas during each week through interdisciplinary lessons. Additionally, teachers will remediate concepts and address misconceptions in an effort to fill in gaps in learning to meet state academic stands.
