Introducing Greencity

The Scottish Wholefood Collective Warehouse, trading as Greencity Wholefoods, is a wholesaler of fine food and drink, which stocks 5,000 product lines, based in Glasgow’s east end. Our main goal is to promote better food alternatives, in terms of health and diet, throughout the food chain. We encourage local producers and are committed to buying organic where possible. We do not sell any products tested on animals and we only sell goods that are suitable for vegetarians.

As we are a worker co-operative, we also aim to create a non-exploitative workplace which takes into consideration the interests of the workers, the community and the environment as a whole. We believe in parity of pay and we have a flat management structure, which allows all members equal access to the decision-making process.

We currently have a vacancy for a full-time, permanent position in the role of Class 2 LGV multi drop driver. Full membership is subject to satisfactory completion of a 9 month probationary period.

How Greencity operates as a co-operative

Our decision-making process is democratic and therefore run by consensus.

We have an elected management team, which consists of a representative from each department within the business – Transport, Sales, Buying, Warehouse, Manufacturing, HR, Marketing, IT and Accounts. Each department handles specific aspects of the business, however, these are all inter-related and therefore a high standard of communication has to be maintained at all times.

The management team meet on a regular basis, which helps to ensure the smooth running and development of the co-operative.

When needed, there are also General Meetings, where all staff are present. These deal with issues concerning the co-operative as a whole and provide everyone with the opportunity to express their views.

Full Members meetings are also held when required, to discuss employment of new members, acceptance of probationary members to full membership, and policy decisions such as those regarding finance and resources.

Expectations – Greencity and You

Greencity expects that members, full and probationary, be responsible for their actions, acting with foresight at all times with regard to how these actions may affect co-workers, the customer, and Greencity as a whole.

Greencity is, first and foremost, a business, and should be treated as such. Members should ask of themselves: What am I doing? Why am I doing it? Can I improve how I am doing it?

On joining the co-operative, a member accepts a degree of control over his/her working life, not present in a conventional company. The responsibility of decision-making in the affairs of the co-operative carries the same weight as assessing one’s own individual working practices.

Members are expected to work hard and when necessary, to stay beyond close of business to complete the day’s work. Members are expected to be flexible and reliable and to assist other departments when needed.

Members should be open to reviewing and improving working practices, adapting to new ideas, developing new opportunities and following through proposals to a satisfactory conclusion.

Becoming a member of Greencity requires commitment, but in return, offers an enjoyable and supportive working environment.
