Office hours: Mon. 11.30-13.00; Thur. 14.30-16.00
Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach the student to understand and perform computations involving vectors, matrices, and systems of linear equations.
Course Topics or Content: 1. Systems of linear equations; 2. Matrices, matrix algebra 3. Determinants, eigenvalues, diagonalization; 4. Vectors in two and three dimensions. Planes, hyperplanes; 5. Vector spaces, basis. (For complete detail see the course Web Page).
Teaching Methods: A combination of lectures, class and lab exercises, along with homework and projects will prepare the students for quizzes and tests. The properties of geometrical vectors in two and three dimensions will be used to motivate similar results in higher dimensions. Systems of equations will be studied in terms of lines, planes, and hyperplanes. Dot and cross products, and determinants will be used extensively. The CAS's Maple will be introduced and used in the course. Student projects will illustrate the use of these ideas and techniques in current technologies.
Evaluation Procedures and Breakdown of Marks: The final mark is the higher of the two marks computed via the Marking Schemes A and B.
Marking scheme A:
Webwork12% (six assignments)
Projects13% (three projects)
2 Class tests 50%
Final Exam 25% (in the final exam period)
Marking scheme B:
Webwork12% (six assignments)
Projects13% (three projects)
2 Class tests 25%
Final Exam 50% (in the final exam period)
Attendance:You are responsible for all work, even if you are absent. Attendance will be monitored. If you miss a test, you mustprovide a doctor’s note. All electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops etc. must be turned off upon entering class.
Textbooks, Materials: Suggested Textbook: W.K. Nicholson, Linear Algebra with Applications, 5th ed., Publisher: McGraw-Hill; Many course materials will be posted on the Web Page as the course progresses.
College Policies
The College policies on academic complaints (see 72108); cheating and plagiarism (see 721012); and religious holy day absences (see 721020) will be followed.
Any form of cheating or plagiarism will result in a grade of zero on the test or assignment, and a letter from the teacher will be placed in your file. A repeated offence may lead to even more serious consequences. Please consult The Vanier Student Writing Guide, the Vanier College Catalogue, the Student Handbook and your teacher for more information.
