StudentActivity:
ModellingaSimpleArchitecturalStructure
Usingthe software, transformyourdigitalshed model into a cardboardmodel (seevideo 15.1:ModellingYour Structure”).
Procedure
1.Openup yourSketchUp Makesoftware, andas thesoftware loads watch thetutorial video(“Modelling YourStructure”). Once the software hasloaded, openyourshedfile.
2.Next,set up yourprinter. Select the landscapeorientation for yourpaper and select thecorrect printer(askyourinstructor ifyou donotknowwhich printer to select).
3.Togetaccuratescale views, change your cameraperspective to parallel projection, asshownin thevideo.
4.Next, select thecamera standardviewFRONT.
5.Zoomintoyourshed so it fits fullyandiscentred on yourscreen.
6.OpenthePrint Preview windowand set the scaleupasfollows (Figure 2) forletter-sizedpaper.
Figure2
7.CheckyourPreview.Ifyourshed fits nicely on thepage, then go aheadandprint.
8.Repeatsteps4–7 for theremainingthreeviews (right,left, back).
9.Cut outall of yourviewsandglue themtocardboard using stick glue.
10.Cut out the cardboard, followingthe outlineof yourviews. Once you cut themout, youshould havefourpieces: front, rightside, backandleftside.
11.Completethe interior ofthe shedbydrawing anyspecial features and colouringthe walls.
12.SketchUp does not providean adequate viewof the roof for printing. SketchUpcancreatea bird’s-eyeview, butif youwere to print thatandthen cut itout with cardboard, the roofpieces would betoo short, because you wouldbe printing therun length of the roof insteadof theslope length (Figure3).
Figure3
13.Inordertocreate yourroof, you will have tomeasure therun lengthfrom thefrontview cut-out, andthe roof length from the sideviewcut-out (Figures2 and3).Then, lay outthosetworectangles on thecardboard and cut themout.Youcancolour ordrawyourroof materialdetails at thispoint. Hot glue theridgelineto createaone-piece roof.Keep theroof detachedfromyourshed, likealid.

14.Glue yourfour shed walls togetherusinghotglue; then hot glue theframe toa cardboardbase.
15.Create anyadditionalinterior featuresout ofcardboardor other recycled modelling material.
16.Create anyadditionalexterior featuresout ofcardboardor other recycled modelling material.
17.Write yournameand yourshedscaleon thecardboard base. Then giveyour project aonceover before handing it in to yourteacher.Rememberto keepyourroof detached soyourinstructor can see inside your structure. If you usedthe samescale asthe example, thenthescale shouldread = 1:24, meaning 1 inch ofyour model equatesto 24 inches in real life.
