Interview a Visual Artist……. Studio Art Project

proposal due 9/26, essay due 10/31

1.  Find a local artist you would like to interview. It should be someone that you are not related to or live with. If you need suggestions please ask your parents or your teacher.

2.  Call or visit the artist to ask it they would be willing to speak with you about their work. It would be best if you could visit their studio as well.

3.  Write 20 interview questions to use.

Sept. 26th: tell your teacher that you will be doing the interview assignment. Hand in your questions and the name of the artist you intend to interview. I will review your questions, make suggestions and return them to you.

4.  Interview the artist. Be sure to be polite and to thank them for their time. You should take notes and write down the answers to your questions. You might try taping or video if you can and they agree. You may want to take pictures if you can.

5.  Choose one artwork that interests you. Critique that art work using the format at the bottom of the page. Write it in essay form to hand in with your interview.

6.  Write your article…you may write it in question/answer format or you may write your article as an essay including the same information.

7.  Check your work before you hand it in.

Critique format:

DESCRIPTION- Include: Artist/Creator, title, medium, size, date, and price. Describe the subjects, objects, background, texture, color, EVERYTHING you SEE in the art work/artifact!

ANALYSIS- Which has the artist/creator emphasized?: Line, Shape, Space, Color, Rhythm, Variety, Unity, Proportion [Determine which were used and describe].

INTERPRETATION- What story or issue is the artist/creator trying to present in the art work/artifact? Does it relate to history, society, morality, etc? Explain. [Remember this is your interpretation.]

JUDGMENT- What do you think of the work? Base your answer on: Imitationalism [how realistic it is] OR Formalism [How well done it is] OR Emotionalism [how it appeals to you an emotional or personal level].

e. What does the artist/artisan look like? If you cannot find a picture use your imagination.
