Interprofessional Learning Group: Emerging Leaders

Information and Application

Introduction

The Interprofessional Learning Group: Emerging Leaders Programme offers a new approach to supporting the leadership development of staff at an early stage in their career, reflecting how emerging leaders can meet the challenges in delivering better health and social care in a complex and ever-changing environment.

There is an emphasis on the value of learning and working together in an interprofessional group. We recognise that leadership and management is not solely the responsibility of a few people in senior positions and that we need effective leadership throughout our organisations at every level.

The Interprofessional Learning Group will be facilitated to help build relationships with colleagues from other professions and gain practical insights into management and leadership today.

Who can apply?

Twenty four places are available across NHS Scotland and will seek to include:

·  General Management Trainees

·  Financial Management Trainees

·  Nurses and midwives e.g. Early Clinical Career Fellows, GNC fund recipients,

·  Allied Health Professionals who have received an NHS Education for Scotland Fellowship

·  Medical staff participating in the NES leadership and management programme

·  Pharmacists who have attended a NES Pharmacy AdvancedLeadership course

·  Clinical or Counselling Psychologists who have completed the NES Generic Supervision Course

What do we mean by early career?

Each professional group has its own career framework making it difficult to agree a standard definition of “early career”. On a practical level, we anticipate applicants will be in Bands 4 to 6 (or equivalent) and will be in their first management role or aspiring to their first role. For clinical colleagues, this may be represented by having lead responsibility for a service, project or team. Applicants may have undertaken some leadership and management development, but are unlikely to have completed a similar programme. If you are not sure whether you are in your “early career”, we will be happy to discuss this on a person by person basis.

What will I gain from the programme?

The programme will focus on enabling you to:

Use a significant range of skills, techniques and approaches to become an increasingly effective leader within your current and emerging role within health and social care.

Draw on own and others experiencestoresolve complex service improvement and professional issues

Develop original and creative options and action plans to support you in your work.

Plan, execute and report on a mutually agreed, creative and innovative Community Challenge applying knowledge, understanding and personal leadership.

What does the programme involve?

The programme has been designed to offer you a unique learning experience which is grounded in your day to day working lives, with strong links to the NHS Scotland Leadership Framework.

Delivering The

What is Action Learning?

Action learning brings together small groups of people to support and challenge each other to resolve practice and professional issues; create options; and agree actions. It is based on the idea that learning and development has to be about real problems in real life with real people and to learn from the effects of that action (McGill & Brockbank 2004). Fellows participate in sets which are supported by experienced Action Learning Set Facilitators.

What time commitment will be involved?

The programme is spread over a 12 month period and requires participants to commit 6 days of face to face sessions, plus input required to develop and deliver a “community challenge”. Dates have been set as follows and participants must be available to attend on ALL DAYS:

Tuesday 7th April 2015
