Internship with Member of Parliament

Internship with Members of Parliament:

PRS Legislative Research is launching a pilot internship program to provide bright, motivated and responsible students to intern with Members of Parliament during the 2007 Monsoon Session of Parliament. PRS is looking for students who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the nature of politics and policy making in India and participating in the process. PRS will be selecting 10 students to intern with MPs for the 2007 Monsoon Session. Based on the experiences of both the student interns and the MPs, PRS will be able to expand the program to a larger number of MPs and students in the future.

Duration of Internship Program:

The Internship Program will last for a period of 10 weeks, beginning the second week of July and ending one week after the end of Monsoon Session. Monsoon Session is likely to start in early August and end by early September. The Internship Program will begin with a 2-week orientation and training session organised by PRS. PRS will work with interns prior and during their internship to train them and orient them to all the necessary aspects of their internship. PRS will be continually available to interns to support their work during their internship. Interns will be expected to be in Delhi for the entire duration of the program. Internship hours will not conflict with class hours.

Role of Intern:

MPs are frequently required to discuss a range of issues. The task of the intern will be to assist the MP in getting the required research inputs in a timely manner. Assignments will range in nature, and will include providing research support to MPs to assist them in fulfilling their legislative and other parliamentary responsibilities.

Compensation:

Interns will get a token stipend of Rs 5,000 from PRS, which will include any incidental expenditures that may need to be incurred in performing the tasks assigned to them.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be in their third year of bachelor degree or pursuing a post-graduate degree. Applicants must possess strong analytical and communicative skills.
