Hi,
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Zhejiang Education Institute, China! We hope that your stay will be beneficial, rewarding and of long lasting value.
This manual is designed to help you in the adjustment to and in the understanding of the surroundings, Chinese culture, and everyday interactions.
Much of the information provided has been based on the experiences of former international teachers. It may be helpful but we believe your passion and personal interest will definitely bring you unexpected encounters and joy.
So, take your time to participate in various activities, meet people, and ask questions. You will see that you will learn a lot more about the country and its people, and thus facilitate your understanding of them.
The International Office at 215 Administration Building is here to help you in the process of cultural adjustment, visa issues, and support. Feel free to stop by and become acquainted with us. We want to make sure that your stay with us is a very pleasant and rewarding experience for you.

ABOUT ZHEJIANG EDUCATION INSTITUTE
Zhejiang Education Institute (hereafter referred as the Institute), located in the garden city of Hangzhou, with the scenic West Lake to its south, is a public higher learning institution subordinated to the Government of Zhejiang Province, which has grown out of Zhejiang Provincial Teacher-training College founded in 1955.
At present, the Institute consists of 8 schools, namely School of Foreign Languages, School of International Commerce and Management, School of Teacher Education and Education Administration, School of Humanities, School of Sciences and Engineering, School of Art, School of Information, School of Adult Education, totally offering more than 50 specialties for undergraduate and sub-degree studies including English, international business and trading, Chinese. In addition, Zhejiang Provincial Training Center for Educational Administrative Personnel, Zhejiang Provincial Training Center for Primary and Secondary School Teachers (including the Sino-German Joint Program) and Zhejiang Provincial Training Center for Computer Science Teachers from Primary and Secondary Schools were set up in the Institute in succession.
Among its 472 staff members and workers, there are 281 professional teachers, 45.5 of which are professors or associate professors and 74% are teachers with doctor or master’s degrees. In the last few years, the Institute has experienced a rapid expansion in all respects. At present, there are 4740full-time students and over 3200 adult students taking undergraduate and sub-degree studies.
Having given priority to research, the Institute has seen the publication and distribution of Journal of Zhejiang Education Institute, Teaching Monthly for Middle Schools, Teaching Monthly for Primary Schools, Moral Teaching and Pupil’s World, which helps cultivate a favorable academic atmosphere in the campus. The Institute has also attached great importance to the educational exchanges and cooperation with universities home and abroad. So far, we have maintained a long lasting and friendly relationship with over a dozen institutions like the University of Wisconsin- River Falls and Radford University in the US, Hans-Seidel Foundation and the Weingarten University of Education in Germany, and Pingdong Education University in Taiwan.

C. Pay Day
We usually pay the international teachers on 30th of each month for the previous month starting from September 30. If it falls on a weekend we will pay it on the Friday before that day. Please tell us information of your banking card otherwise we will pay you by cash.
D. School Days
The winter vacation will start from January 21 to February 28, 2010. The spring semester will start from March 1. (See more on School Calendar)

F. Meals
Cafeteria is on the first floor (mainly for staff, set food for lunch and ordered dishes for supper) and the second floor of the last building by the back gate providing a variety of dishes. Dining card should be obtained from the card center with a written notice from the International Office. The card fee is 10 yuan. Set food is also available in the dining hall of Fangcaoyuan Hotel.
Hours: 6:40 – 9:00, 11:00 – 13:00, 16:30 – 19:00 every day.
G. Copying
Copying service is available on campus beside the Hotel. For high-quality professional services, go to Hengsheng Graphic 恒晟图文 (opposite to our school). Please contact your teaching assistants in case some materials need to be copied for teaching purposes.
H. Repairs
Please feel free to call the International Office if your room facilities need repairing.
I. Mails and Packages
The International Office will call you if any mail or package arrives. Upon receiving of package notices, please pick up your packages at the appointed post office with the notice and your passport.

The nearby banks, like PD Development Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, and Bank of China, provide money exchange service. When your contract ends and you would like to transfer your salary back to your native currency, please go to Zhejiang Branch, the Bank of China Zhejiang Branch (Zhongyin Tower浙江中银大厦, 321 Fengqi Road 凤起路) with the following documents:

R. Taxi Fare
The fare for standard cars is 10 yuan for the first three kilometers plus 1 yuan for the gas tax. Additional 2 yuan will be charged for every other kilometer.
When taking a taxi, you should ask for the receipt or jot down the car number. Short distance fares are paid according to the meter but for long distance fares, the passenger should negotiate the fare before hand and insist on a receipt.
