International School of Koje – Dress Code Policy

Related Policies
This policy is intended to form part of an interrelated group of school policies:

·  ISK Disciplinary Procedures

·  Child Protection Policy

As these policies are introduced during the 2013-14 academic year, the school will review to see that they are all in alignment. In addition, policies should also be read alongside other information and guidance provided in the school handbooks (Parent Handbook & Staff Handbook).

Policy Aims

1. The purpose of this policy is to assist staff, parents, and students in their decision making about which items of clothing are deemed to be appropriate for students attending I.S.K.

2. This policy shall apply to all students at ISK during the regular school day and all I.S.K sponsored events.

Rationale

1. There is a strong relationship between neat, appropriate attire and a respectful and positive learning environment.

2. Apparel or appearance which tends to draw attention to an individual rather than to a learning situation should be avoided.

Standards

1. Students are expected to dress in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning environment that is free of distractions and disruptions and to adhere to standards of dress and appearance that prepare them for success once they leave the I.S.K community.

2. The standards for school attire reflect "common sense" and a concern for each student’s comfort, safety, and cleanliness.

3. All clothing should be appropriate to the student’s age, the school setting, and weather conditions.

Students are required to use good judgment, to respect themselves and others, and to demonstrate modesty in selecting suitable attire.

Exceptions

1. Exceptions may be allowed in special circumstances or occasions such as holidays or special performances and in certain classes such as physical education, vocational classes, and science labs.

2. A ‘common sense’ approach for younger students will be maintained.

Consequences

If a student’s dress does not meet these standards, the Principal, Assistant Principal or a teacher, may counsel the student and ask the student to change. The student may call home for a change of clothes.

Final Decision

1. The Principal and Assistant Principal are given wide latitude of discretion in the determination of proper or improper attire.

2. In matters of opinion, the judgment of the Principal, Assistant Principal, or Team Leader shall prevail.

Clothing Guidelines – Middle Years Only

To help create the best learning environment for Middle Years Students (years 7-9), the following standards for student dress should be observed.

1. Clothing or accessories may not display offensive, provocative, vulgar language or images and must not advertise products which students may not legally purchase.

2. Pants/trousers must not sag below the waist and must be at a safe length.

3. Blouses and shirts should be constructed so that the top of the shoulder is covered and is fitted under the arms (no halter tops, tank tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, or bare-shouldered tops of any type will be allowed).

4. Blouses and shirts which expose any portion of the waist, hips, or midriff are not allowed. Blouses/shirts which are not appropriate for school include those which are low-cut, see-through, backless, or tube tops.

5. When leggings are worn, skirts, pants, dresses or shorts must be worn over the leggings.

6. Skirts, pants, dresses, and shorts must be beyond fingertip length.

7. Outer clothing which resembles loungewear, pyjamas, or underwear is prohibited.

8. Holes in clothing that are excessive in size or amount, are a distraction to the learning environment, or allow skin to show are prohibited.

9. Head apparel, except for religious or medical purposes, must not be worn inside the school building.

10. Footwear is required and must be safe and appropriate for indoor and/or outdoor activity.
