Geraldine Finegan(Dunleer AC) has arrived back from Slovenia, from the European Masters’ Championships with 3 gold medals. A delighted Geraldine won the heptathlon, pentathlon and 400m hurdles picking up personal bests along the way. (details phoned in by Geraldine)

Celtic Games, Grangemouth Scotland

Meanwhile in Scotland, Dunleer ACs Rory Kirwan enjoyed his first International experience, at the Celtic Games in Scotland. Rory, the reigning under 18 National javelin Champion produced a best throw of 45 metres 19 centimetres to gain third place behind athletes from Wales and Scotland. The AAI Irish team finished in 2nd place overall with Wales 1st, Scotland 3rd and Ulster in 4th place. A great learning experience for Rory which will surely stand to him in future competitions.

Glenmore AC hosted the Michael Fearon and Kevin Marron 5km Road Race in Carlingford on Friday night. This very competitive event attracted runners from both sides of the border. Dunleer ACs men were led home by Barry Monaghan in the senior men’s race and Tomás Cotter,who finished in 3rd place in the junior section, behind two Clonliffe runners and 15th overall.

Dunleer AC ladies were in action in the senior ladies’ section with Sandra Doheny, Sinead Kelly and Geraldine Finegan all finishing in around 24 minutes. In the girls under 17 Áine Kirwan of Dunleer AC ran a steady race as she prepares for her upcoming challenge a 5km run at the Ocean State cross country in Rhode Island in September, where she will compete with 25 athletes from Scoil Uí Mhuirí, Dunleer against school teams from the East coast of the US.

The AAI Masters Championship in Tullamore next weekend will feature Dunleer AC’s Geraldine Finegan, Earl Taylor and Malachy Campbell. All showed great form at the recent Louth Championships in Bush, Glenmore and will be hoping to medal at their various disciplines with Geraldine and Earl competing in the maximum 5 events, Geraldine over 40 and Earl over 60. Malachy will compete in the 100m and 200m over 40.

Boyne AC Sports

The annual sports at Meadowview, Drogheda and hosted by local Club Boyne AC proved a very enjoyable day of athletics for the young Dunleer AC athletes who participated.

In the boys under 7, Oisín Cheshire ran a great race in the 60 metres to finish in 4thplace. Nicole Finegan finished 4th in the girls under 8 60 metres, battling all the way to the line. She also ran a great 200 metres. Conor Matthews finished 5th in the 60 metres for under 8 boys. In the girls under 9 Emma Cheshire finished a close 2nd in both the 80 metres and the 200metres, with Seoda Matthews finishing 3rd in the 80 metres and 4th in the 200metres. In the boys under 9 Kevin Ledwith pulled off a great double winning both the 80 metres and the 200 metres. Brendan Haak was a finalist in the 100 metres under 11 and finished 6th in the 300 metres. Shane Cheshire was 2nd in the 300 metres and 4th in the 100 metres. In the junior men under 17, Shane Farrell ran a great 1500 metres and was just out sprinted in the final 100 metres to finish in 2nd place. The relay team under 9 brought home the gold while the boys under 13 were pleased with their silver medals.
