General:The Africa-based, globally networked International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries. ILRI positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our staff works in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world. ILRI’s headquarter is in Nairobi, Kenya, with a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our staff are also based in 7 partner institutions in other parts of Africa and in Asia and Latin America. The position: ILRI seeks to recruit apost-doctoral social scientist to join a team in one of ILRI’s five Themes, conducting research toassess and enhance the impact of pro-poor livestock research. The successful candidate will lead the social science component of a major collaborative research project seeking to enable smallholder farmers in West Africa that depend on cattle to sustainably manage the primary livestock disease constraint, trypanosomosis, and limit the negative effects of resistance to veterinary drugs. Specifically, the job will require contributions to the following thematic areas:
- Using an innovation systems framework, design and implement a process for facilitating the scaling up and out of results from recent research on trypanocidal drug resistance,
- Evaluate the factors constraining or encouraging farmers and other stakeholders to manage trypanosomosis appropriately under different scenarios for drug resistance,
- Assess the returns to investments to research related to detecting and mitigating trypanocidal drug resistance, extending conventional approaches to consider the process of dissemination from an innovation systems perspective
- Supervision of graduate students involved in the project.
Location: ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya, with regular travel to West Africa
The successful candidate will have:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in economics, agricultural economics, anthropology or other relevant discipline in the social sciences
- Knowledge and experience related to animal health issuesor to smallholder livestock production systems in developing countries
- Demonstrated skills in quantitative statistical and econometric analysis
- Good knowledge of analytical methods for economic impact assessment
- Experience working in multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting.
- Strong English and French language written and spoken skills,
Terms of appointment: The initial appointment will be for twoyears with the possibility of renewal for one year, contingent upon individual performance. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
