Intermediate and Primary Schools Water Polo Competition Term 1 2018

Hello and welcome to Intermediate and Primary Schools’ Water Polo for term 12018 in Tauranga! The following is all the information you will need to get your teams organised for the next term.

Venue: Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Pool

GRADE / PLAYING NIGHT / TIME / START / FINISH
A / Tuesday / 4-8.30pm / 13.2.18 / 3.4.18
B / Tuesday / 4-8.30pm / 13.2.18 / 3.4.18
C / Friday / 4-8.30pm / 16.2.18 / 6.4.18 - no games Good Friday

Grading - If necessary first night will be a grading night

New schools and Primary schools will be placed in the C grade unless their teacher/coach specifically asks otherwise. Once the draw is out we do not like making changes so please be sure about asking for this. I have included a space on the entry form for you to indicate your likely grade. Schools that win the B grade or C grade in term 1 will be promoted up a grade in term 4. First night will be a grading night if necessary, as time is tight the first weeks draw will only be available a few days before first game. We encourage schools to get as much sorted as soon as possible.

Team format

Teams can be made up of any ratio of boys or girls. Composite teams must be approved by the Tauranga Club, but we encourage schools who only have a few players, to combine with another school so all players have access to water polo. Please contact Dallas Couvee if you are in this situation and let her know how many players you have.

Players transferring between teams

Any teams requiring “fill-ins” on thenight have a choice: you may borrow from any team from the same school from the LOWER grade teams. Any teams borrowing from a higher ranked team must default with the table prior to the game starting. Players can only play 2 games per term in a higher graded team before transferring permanently to that team. Teams may play with fewer players and try to win to earn the competition points, OR advise the referee and other team you are defaulting before the game, and let someone else join your team for the game. The score for a default is 5-0.

Gear

Team members will need appropriate swimming gear. We will supply the referees and the balls, but we do expect schools to have their own caps.

Coach location

Each team must have a parent/teacher on the side of the pool acting as a coach at all times. The coach is not allowed to stand behind the goal during a game. They must stand in the corner with their substitutes at all times.

Substitutions

With substitutes please ensure they are all wearing your teams colour cap. Please ensure they are in their respective corner for substitutions. The substitutes are only allowed in their corner and can’t swim in the lane up to or past halfway. When making a sub during play, please ensure the swimmer in the game pool comes to their respective corner and goes under the lane rope without touching it before your sub enters the pool. The person subbing in cannot touch the lane rope either. If your player subs incorrectly they will be ejected from the game for 20 seconds. Subs can be made at any time once a goal has been scored.

Game time

The A and B grades will be playing 5 minute quarters with a 30 second shot clock. The C grade will be playing 5 minute quarters with no shot clock. This timeframe allows the next teams 5 minutes in the pool to warm up before their game starts. Please do not warm up in the side lane whilst a game is being played.

Polytechnic rules

Showers must be taken before entering the pool at the Polytech.

No balls or players not involved in the game are allowed in the side lane whilst a game is being played.

Cost

The cost is $425.00 per team or approx $42.50 per player. This covers pool entry, use of gear, referee etc. Most teams will want at least 10 players.

Team Size

6 team members play at once (including the goalie). You can have up to 11 players in a team.

Mercy Rule

We have adopted a mercy rule for teams that win and lose by large margins.

Accounts will be issued to schools by Tauranga Water Polo Club. Payment terms will be listed on the accounts.

Please note new rules:

  • exclusion time will be brought back to 10 seconds
  • shots from behind the five (5) meter mark will no longer be allowed off a foul. If this does happen, referees will call for a turn over and the ball will be awarded to the defensive team, receiving the shot.
  • ALL players on the game sheet MUST play one (1) full period during the first half of the game; no substitutions (other than through injury) are allowed during play within the first two (2) quarters, i.e a coach plays six (6) players during the complete first quarter of the game and then up to six (6) different players, including the goalkeeper if there is a second goalkeeper listed, during the second quarter. In the third and fourth quarter, a coach may sub without limitations when possible.
