Meeting Minutes:

  1. Introduction of Carol Summers, PIO and Meredith Brown, Director of Advancement, Education Fund.
  2. Conversations about Courses: Margot and Ann talking about their evening course, “A Sense of Place” – intersections of Composition, Literature, and Science. More input?

Ann and Margot discussed link and coordinated studies ENV 150 and ENG 101/102 or 265

Three units: Forest and Mountains, Rivers and Cities, Puget Sound water and Salmon

Field trip component for 2 credits to make it 12 credits. Proposed two, one day field trips offered.

Student feed back – asked the students on the 1st and last day of class: “What is a Sense of Place?”

Used a historical progress to make connections as to what is happening in this planet.

Enrollment for night coordinated studies is it stable?

Interdisciplinarity: Do the students see the intersection? Is it integrated thinking or interdisciplinary thinking?

The Thornton Creek Reader was suggested for reading.

What about the Home Water Project?

Assessment:

  1. Impact on faculty to be learning a different discipline.
  2. Out Reach to High Schools
  3. Twenty-One high school student scholarships are being offered in 07-08.
  4. IS brochure – is that something we can do? (an example of the marketing plan was handed out)
  5. Have events where students can speak to students about what interdisciplinary Studies is: perhaps have an ambassador for this, video, or website (online to take students to specific website)

Meredith Brown discussed a scholarship on “Teaching and Learning” Fund, “Ed Fund”

  1. Edith’s report on the Honor’s Program idea (district).

Edith discussed the district wants to give money to honor students and programs.

  1. The first meeting they set up goals to increase retention and 4 year transfer students.
  2. What do we want to see in the program that is campus specific?
  3. Want to focus on Interdisciplinary Studies and Service Learning and research.
  4. They did not discuss three quarters of a foreign language but that may be helpful.
  5. Students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average.
  6. Will need to have a coordinator from each campus.
  7. Phi Theta Kappa representatives will be involved.
  1. Fall Retreat (date: Sunday – Tuesday, September 9-11th) – do we want to commit? (Convocation is September 19th).

These dates will not work. Discussed moving the date to Sunday – Tuesday, September 16-18th.

How to Seminar

Working of rough cut or “rough draft”.

Video will be shown at the State Board conference.

Video will be shown at the next Interdisciplinary Studies Committee meeting.

The transcript is almost finished then it can be posted.

  1. Making Learning Visible Symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6th, 11AM-2PM. I’d like to have an Integrative learning area (who will commit?)

Jane is encouraging people and entire classrooms to come and participate.

  1. Next year’s assessment projects: do we want to investigate anything besides interdisciplinary learning? (Program Review Action Plan)

Do we want to assess at the Gen. Ed. level?

Will discuss in more detail at the next Interdisciplinary Studies Committee meeting.
