Study Guide Ch. 17 and 18

•  Intensity- The amount of energy in a sound wave

•  Loudness – the human perception of the intensity of sound

•  Doppler Effect – the apparent change of pitch when a sound is moving relative to the hearer

•  Music – sounds that have a repeating pattern

•  Acoustics - related to the study of how to optimize sound

•  Echolocation – method of hunting or navigating using echoes

•  Pitch – the highness or lowness of a sound - the higher the frequency the higher the pitch

•  Decibel – the unit used to measure the energy or intensity of sound

•  Sonar – system of echolocation used to map the bottom of the sea

•  Electromagnetic wave – carries energy and does not require a medium to travel, speed is 300,000,000m/s or 3X108 m/s

•  Radiant energy – the type of energy an electromagnetic wave carries

•  Electromagnetic spectrum – the list of the different types of electromagnetic waves

•  Radio wave – longest wavelength , lowest energy and frequency of the EMRs

•  Infrared wave – felt as heat, invisible

•  Visible light – the part of the EM spectrum that is visible ROY G BIV

•  Ultraviolet radiation – causes sunburn, slightly higher frequency than visible light, provides Vitamin D

•  X ray- used for medical imaging, can be damaging

•  Gamma ray – most energetic EMR has the shortest wavelength and the highest frequency, used to treat cancer, dangerous

  1. What determines the amount of energy in an Electromagnetic wave? frequency
  2. List the electromagnetic spectrum in order from least energetic to most energetic.

Radio→Microwave→Infrared→Visible Light→Ultraviolet→X-rays→Gamma rays

  1. List the electromagnetic spectrum in order from longest wavelength to shortest wavelength.
