Miss Waysack

Welcome back to a new school year and to Integrated Math 2! The following is a list of topics we will be covering this year:

  • Functions, Equations, and Systems
  • Matrix Methods
  • Coordinate Methods
  • Regression and Correlation
  • Nonlinear Functions and Equations
  • Network Optimization
  • Trigonometric Functions
  • Probability Distributions

Text:Core-Plus Mathematics (Course 2)

Description of the Course:

This course is designed to integrate the major strands of mathematical thought: algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry and trigonometry, and discrete mathematics. Students will demonstrate number sense, use measurement in real situations, analyze and apply geometric properties, use patterns and functions to analyze algebraic models, understand probability, be able to collect and analyze data using statistical procedures, and use and apply mathematical processes to solve problems.

This course is designed to prepare you to be highly successful on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) which is given in March. My approach to teaching this course will be one of collaboration and hands on investigations. Research has proven that working together through collaboration will help students learn concepts with a greater depth of understanding. I intend to challenge you to really understand mathematics and its significance in nearly all facets of daily living.

Classroom Expectations:

1) Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings, ready to start class.

2) Raise your hand if you have a question or comment that you would like to share.

3) Please stay seated while I’m teaching; it is a distraction to both myself and your classmates to have you walking around during a lesson unless absolutely necessary.

4)You are expected to follow the school rules outlined in your planner while in my classroom (no electronic devices, follow the dress code, use appropriate language, etc.)

I will always show you the utmost respect and expect the same in return, to both myself and your classmates. Failure to behave appropriately or follow the school rules in my classroom will result in consequences.

Grading Weights:

Tests/Quizzes: 70%Classwork and Homework: 30%

I will update the gradebook on a weekly basis.

Classwork:

You will be expected to come prepared for class with all materials, complete openers, stay on task during group work, be a positive part of the group, and participate in daily activities. Points will be deducted from your grade if you do not choose to participate appropriately in class.

Homework:

Homework will be checked for completion and will be a springboard for discussion. Homework is graded on a 0-5 point scale based upon the amount of work shown and attempt made on each problem assigned. Homework will not be heavy in quantity of problems but will normally require in-depth thinking and written explanations.

Tests/Quizzes:

Assessments will count towards a majority of your grade in this course. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced and are intended to check your progress throughout a given unit. Tests will be used for you to demonstrate what you know about a unit as a whole.

Retake Policy:

Retakes may be offered on some assessments. Students who earn below an 80% may participate in the retake process, which usually involves making corrections and doing remediation work. I usually give my students one week to complete this process and you may earn a maximum of 80% on a retake. We will discuss this policy further as the school year progresses.

Make-Up Work:

If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to determine what notes and homework you missed. If you chose not to complete your missing work, you will receive a zero on the assignment. You have as many days as you missed to make up your work. If you miss a test or a quiz, you will need to schedule a time to make it up as soon as you return.

Assignments and announcements for tests/quizzes will be posted on SchoolPointe.

Materials Needed Daily:

1)Textbook – be sure to cover your book!

2)Writing Utensils

3)Graphing Notebook

4)Folder or Binder

5)Graphing Calculator - I would recommend a TI-84 calculator, although a TI-83 will also work, and these calculators are a requirement of the course. Each student needs their OWN calculator with the NAME ON THE CALCULATOR.

Failure to bring materials to class will result in consequences.

Hall Passes:

Each quarter you will receive 3 hall passes. These are to last you for the duration of 9 weeks. You may use a hall pass to leave the room to use the restroom, get a drink, or go to your locker. Once your hall passes are gone, you may not leave the room during my class without a consequence.

Availability:

It is my responsibility as your teacher to help you to become the best math student you can be. One of the ways we can work towards your success in my class is for you to come in for extra help. I am available after school to work with you…however, if you would like to guarantee time to meet with me, it would be best for you to come to me and let me know that you plan to come in (especially if you would like help before school).

E-mail is the fastest way to contact me; do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at any time. I check my e-mail numerous times a day and will get back to you as soon as possible.

After School Study Center:

I am one of the advisors who run the After School Study Center in the library from 2:30 – 3:30pm. The After School Study Center is similar to a study hall, so if you need a quiet place to get your homework done, you should take advantage of the ASSC. I will be running the ASSC on Mondays and Thursdays, so if you’d like to get help with math you should plan on coming down to the library after school.

I look forward to getting to know you and working with you to make this a fun, exciting, and productive school year! 
