Course Syllabus

Course Description: This course of study is designed to teach the student computer concepts as related to processing data into useful information needed in business situations by using database, spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software. The emphasis is on speed, accuracy, and production using proper keyboarding techniques.

Competencies: Given the necessary equipment, supplies, and appropriate software, the student will be able to successfully complete standards related to the following topics:

  • Safety and Ethics—1 Week
  • Employability Skills—1/2 Week (ongoing)
  • Student Organizations—1/2 Week
  • Basic Computer Concepts—1 ½ Weeks
  • Internet Applications—1 Week
  • WORD—5 Weeks
  • EXCEL—5 Weeks
  • POWERPOINT—2 Weeks
  • ACCESS—1 ½ Weeks
  • Project/Simulation Learning—(Ongoing)

Grading:

  • Test/Major Grades (50%)
  • Classwork/quiz/homework (40%)
  • Participation (10%)

**Student grades are available on PowerSchool. Parents must contact office for more information!**

Available for help and/or to make-up work:

  • Planning (3rd Block)
  • Lunch (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
  • Break (Tuesday-Friday)
  • After school (Tuesday-Thursday with prior arrangements made)

Rules/Procedures:

  • Bring all material to class. (1 binder/folder and pencils or pens. Optional: colored pencils/markers because we do a lot of activities/projects!)
  • Pay attention/follow directions.
  • No gum, candy, food, drinks, etc.
  • Use of computers:
  • No Internet use without permission.
  • No social media, movies, or videos on computers or cell phones.
  • Do not use email in class without permission; it must be used appropriately.
  • Do NOT change screen savers, backgrounds, settings, etc. (w/o permission). Nothing inappropriate should be on it.
  • Do not use Apex in this room.
  • Be in your seat ready to work when tardy bell rings. If not, you will be marked tardy.
  • Come in class quietly and sit at your computer station.
  • Do not change seats or equipment.
  • Sit in chairs appropriately.
  • Keep work area neat and put away all items appropriately.
  • Keep hands, feet, objects, and unnecessary (disrespectful) comments to yourself.
  • Do NOT write on desks, computers, mouse pads, etc.
  • No cell phones, IPODS, or any other electronic devices.
  • Follow dress code including no hats, hoodies, or shades.
  • Do NOT walk around room unless it is necessary.
  • No horseplay.
  • Do MY work and if you have work for another teacher, then you may work on that.
  • No excessive talking or talking across the room to others (unless the assignment requires it).
  • No sleeping.

CONSEQUENCES

First:Warning—Student will be asked to stop (depending on the situation/violation).

Second: Student may be kept during break and/or Parent contacted (depending on the situation/violation).

Third:Discipline slip may be written.

*MAJOR DISRUPTIONS, DISRESPECT, OR SEVERE OFFENCES will be immediately referred to the office.

**In some situations, students may be sent to guidance or administration without it resulting in a discipline slip being written (if teacher feels that it would help a situation).

***If a student argues or makes unnecessary comment when given a warning, the next disciplinary consequence will be taken.

****If discipline problems continue after parents/guardians have been contacted, the student will be sent to the office immediately. I will only contact a parent once for behavior problems.
