Int. Kitchen Apartment Day

Int. Kitchen Apartment Day

INT. KITCHEN – APARTMENT – DAY

Except for a few dishes on the counters and in the sink, along with a few clothes lying on the floor, the place is spotless.

The news softly emits from the television in the living room of the apartment. In the kitchen, a couple eats what looks to be TV dinners taken out of the trays and set on plates.

DANE GREEN (30) scratches his chin, where facial hair is beginning to grow. His collared shirt is unbuttoned and the sleeves are rolled up.

MADELINE GREEN (28), dressed in short, blue shorts and a tank top, ties her hair up in a bun before she begins to eat.

There is silence between the two, and the news is the only thing drowning out the quiet.

After a few bites, Madeline sets her fork down. She shifts in her chair uncomfortably and takes a deep breath.

MADELINE

(Uneasy)

I was fired today.

Dane stops chewing and sets his fork down.

MADELINE

Look, I know you’re upset with me now, and I know this was the third job this week I was fire from...

DANE

What happened this time?

MADELINE

Well, okay, get this: this old woman didn’t pay for her food, and before she walked out of the restaurant, I sort of...tackled her.

DANE

(Shocked)

You tackled an old woman?

MADELINE

How was I supposed to know it was “Free Food for Seniors” day?

DANE

Well, you sort of work there. You should have known.

Madeline sighs and continues to eat. Dane stares at her. He folds his arms across his chest. She notices him staring at her. She looks around with an “Uhhh...?” face.

MADELINE

What?

DANE

(Continues to eat)

Oh, nothing.

MADELINE

Look, since I was fired early today, it gave me enough time to find another job.

DANE

Did you find one?

MADELINE

(Proud)

As a matter of fact, I did.

Dane smiles.

DANE

Oh really? Well, what’s the pay for it?

MADELINE

Well, it sort of varies. I think it depends on how well I do.

DANE

Oh yeah? That’s cool.

MADELINE

And I only work nighttime hours. It’s easier and there are more customers around that time. More customers and more hours means bigger pay, you know.

DANE

So we’ll have more time to spend together during the day. Get more work done, etcetera?

MADELINE

Yeah! Exactly!

DANE

So when do you start?

MADELINE

8 ‘o clock tomorrow night.

DANE

Cool!

There’s another moment of silence between them. They continue to eat.

DANE

So, where is it?

MADELINE

Well, most of the loaded men go to the corner of 74th street, so I’m going to start out there.
