Summer Reading: As you complete the reading assignments below, you may find that you need to clear up some questions. If so, do not hesitate to contact me (contact info included). When you do text or email, please use proper phone/email etiquette- begin text (or email) by introducing yourself, followed by any questions you may have. I will respond as soon as possible.

  1. The Book of Genesis (in the Bible)

The stories within the book of Genesis are mentioned multiple times in literature; therefore, the need to read Genesis

is important to your understanding of the literature we will be reading this year.

You may choose a translation that allows you to readily understand the content. An online website you may use is Bible Gateway- just go to the section entitled Genesis.

  1. Edith Hamilton’s Mythology- Read the following excerpts noted below. Take summary notes on each section.
  1. Part One- I: The Gods (all sections)
  2. Part One- III: How the World and Mankind Were Created
  3. Part Two- I: Cupid and Psyche
  4. Part Two- II: Eight Brief Tales of Lovers (all stories)
  5. Part Two-IV: Four Great Adventures (all adventures)
  6. Part Six- I: Midas
  7. Part Seven: The Mythology of the Norsemen (read entire section)

Directions for Summer Reading Notes for BOTH texts:

  1. Short Summaries: write brief, legible summaries ½ pageat the most(no typed notes allowed).
  2. Characterization Notes -characters found in the Bible and Mythology book: please complete a characterization workup for each character/god you encounter in your reading (see attached characterization sheet).

Note: You may use a spiral or composition book to write your notes in.

** Notes will be taken up the second day of class for grading and will count as a test grade; so, do your best on them!

In closing, do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months!

Happy Reading- E. Perrin
