Bob Cooper Scholarship Award Criteria

Eligibility Requirements

·  Full-time high school senior attending an accredited high school.

·  Minimum GPA 2.5 or better.

·  Student must be a resident of the state of Illinois.

·  Declared intention to enroll in an accredited:

o  Two or four-year college or university

o  Business or vocational school

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

·  Signed student application and family data sheet must be completed.

·  Official sealed transcript must be included in your application.

·  A typed & signed letter of recommendation must be included with your application.

·  A wallet sized (headshot only) graduation or school photo* must be included.

·  An essay** on one of the following topics:

o  The Black History Maker That Has Influenced My Life.

o  How My Education Will Benefit My Community.

o  Autobiography of the applicant, written by the applicant.

NOTIFICATION OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The winning scholarship applicant will be notified in writing by 3/31/16. Award amounts will be announced at the Annual Scholarship Luncheon on 4/23/16.

Things to remember:

1.  Application packages must be completed as indicated in the application requirements.

2.  All necessary paper work must be received in one complete package.

3.  Incomplete application packages will not be accepted.

4.  Application packages will be returned for insufficient postage.

5.  Application packages must be received by 3/11/16.

2016 Scholarship Reference Guide

v  Careful planning, research, organization, and attention to application details is critical.

v  Do not hesitate to engage your school counsellor, your financial aid office or your parents for assistance with completing the scholarship application.

v  Be sure you meet ALL eligibility requirements of the scholarship.

v  Your letter of recommendation should be from a teacher, mentor, or a person of positive influence. However, it must be typed and signed.

v  Your official transcript must have a school seal and be sealed.

v  Answer ALL questions completely to the best of your ability.

v  If completing your application by hand, be sure to write legibly using black ink. Though your application may be handwritten, your essay must be typed.

v  Pay close attention to contact information and deadlines.

v  The essay is the time to unleash the power of persuasion in your creative writing, so remember to provide details as you write. Your essay must be typed.

v  Present your best photo. Headshots of graduation or school pictures only.

v  Please proofread your application and essay and avoid abbreviating.

v  Remember to sign & date the application.

v  Be sure to include the ATTUID of the person sponsoring your application, if applicable.

v  Submit a COMPLETED application by the deadline, 3/11/16.

v  Unless otherwise stated, do not contact the liaison. If selected, you will be notified in writing.

v  All students are encouraged to apply for other scholarships early by inquiring with your current high school, library, community programs, places of worship, and your parents’ place of employment.

*Your photo downloaded onto a CD is acceptable. Please note that photos and CDs will NOT be returned. **The essay must be a minimum of 2 pages and no more than 3 pages, typed, double spaced using a 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font and must be signed by the applicant.
