Instructions for Looking After Cox Boxes Correctly
Here are some hints for how we can make sure we look after our cox boxes correctly. We have just purchased a new one, so it is vital that we look after it really well because they are expensive and college won’t give us the money again too quickly if the cox boxes break due to us not looking after them properly. However, all the instructions below are to be followed for the use of any cox box, not just the new one. Any questions email Kim or Kathryn.
- Take extra care when attaching the electrical components of the cox box when plugging it into the boat
-Make sure that the pins and receptacle are lined up properly
-Do not force it in, this is how damage occurs
- To maintain battery life when using the cox box, keep the battery as low as possible (but still loud enough so that everyone can hear)
- Put cox boxes on charge whenever they are not in use, but do not leave it charging indefinitely
-It should not be charged continuously for longer than 2 days
-If the battery light shows, the cox box needs charging for at least 12 hours before it is next used
-Cox boxes, when fully charged, should last for 4 hours (if not, the cox box might need new batteries, which the committee will look into)
- Do not continue to use the cox box if the low battery warning light is illuminated – repeated use when the warning light is on will damage the batteries and the unit
- Obvious, but please try not to drop the microphone or the whole cox box unit
- Do not carry the cox box by the microphone. The microphone is the most easily damaged part of the cox box, and often results in crackly, irritating noises when you use it
On a totally separate note, the guide for the new cox box recommends that we wash the unit every month with warm water and mild soap. If the unit looks dirty, please could you make sure you give it a quick clean and dry it thoroughly afterwards.
Finally, if you notice any problems when you next use a cox box, please could you either let one of the captains know, or email Kim or Zoe. We need to know as soon as possible if cox boxes are not working properly so we can get them fixed, especially as there are loads of crews wanting water time this year!
