An ongoing assessment by the Department of Physical Therapy determined the need to exclude orthotic devices specific to neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation from this course and include them in other courses.

8501. Prosthetics (2) Formerly PTHE 7501 P: PTHE 8200. Patient assessment, prescription criteria, rehabilitation goals, and treatment techniques. Functional assessment of patients’ prosthetic devices.

b. Syllabus:

General Goals: Upon completion of this course, students will:

1) Design therapeutic interventions that are common to the a population of patients who wear prosthetic devices.

2) Evaluate and analyze components of contemporary prosthetic devices for the spine and extremities and the respective selection criteria.

3) Design goals for patients with prosthetic devices.

4) Design rehabilitation techniques specific to patients prescribed prosthetic devices.

5) Design patient assessments specific to the utilization of prosthetic devices.

Syllabus

Prosthetics: Introduction, epidemiology, surgical levels, pre and post surgical assessments, post-surgical and pre-prosthetic management.

Management of partial foot amputations, Symes amputation, prosthetic feet.

Transtibial amputations, BK prosthesis, prosthetic training and rehabilitation.

Transfemoral Prosthetics and rehabilation

Transfemoral, hip disarticulations, hemipelvectomy

BK and AK gait issues and abnormalities

Gait workshop

Pre-Prosthetic lab Strengthening, stretching, agility, coordination and balance)

Gait training

Stump Wrapping and other edema control devices

Stump Wrapping and other edema control devices

Upper Extremity Prosthetics
